This month we celebrate Native American/American Indian (AIAN) heritage. Let's start by looking at where AIAN people with disabilities live! According to the 2022 American Community Survey's 5-Year data, 17% live in rural areas, 19% live in suburban areas, and a majority 64% live in an urban setting. Understanding where different groups of people live can help agencies and advocacy groups know where to focus resources.

According to research by Kessler Foundation and the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability, only 26% of supervisors said their company has policies that proactively recruit job applicants with disabilities. This tells us there’s still work to be done.

True inclusion starts with intention—building systems that seek it out. When organizations prioritize disability-inclusive hiring, we take a powerful step toward a future where everyone belongs, and where talent is recognized in all its forms.

In 2023, just over half of working-age adults with vision disabilities (52%) were employed, compared to 76% of adults without vision disabilities. Gaps show up in industries as well. Some industries show similar representation of workers with and without vision difficulties, while others such as Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services have a significant gap.

Through research, education, and partnerships that empower people and communities, we can close gaps with inclusion and accessibility. This year, we're continuing the work with the
American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) to provide stats on nuances in daily life that Blind and Low Vision community experience. This month we observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month ( ) where we focus on celebrating the value and talent people with disabilities bring to their jobs. Communities are strongest when they embrace everyone. Yet, too many people with disabilities still face barriers to full participation.

In 2023, employment for adults with disabilities hit a historic high of 46% since 2008. We celebrate that and also recognize the gap when compared to people without disabilities (79%). Differences in opportunity, access, and equity contribute to this gap.

We envision a world where inclusion is a given, accessibility is assumed, and everyone can participate fully and equally. Through inclusive research, transformative education, and partnerships that empower people and communities, we are working to make this future real. Aging well is about more than health—it’s also about security and stability. In the United States, 16% of adults ages 65 and over with a disability experience poverty. This highlights the economic challenges many older adults face, especially those living with disabilities.

Healthy Aging Month encourages us to think about what older adults need in order to thrive. Ensuring that people can age with dignity means paying attention to inclusion, accessibility, and access to resources that support a good quality of life. Institute on Disability
