Valentines Day. A beautiful holiday; a day devoted to exploring and expressing our deepest feelings of love, gratitude, and appreciation. A day in which we open our hearts to reveal our unspoken longings for connection and union.

Of course, the over-culture constricts the day into one of predictable consumerism: greeting cards, chocolates, wine, red roses, lacy undergarments, and expensive dinners.

Let's not let that distortion reduce the power and grace of a Day of Love.

And let's not reject the sharing of gifts simply because such exchange has been reduced to commerce.

Our dollars are energy. Originally, money itself was symbolic of pure gratitude: cowry shells, beads, and other items of no obvious "use."

Let's recapture that essence as we spend it on ourselves and our loved ones this year.

Can we support local businesses? Fair-wage operations? Home-based and craft-based concerns? Entrepreneurs whose bottom lines include the planet and the people, in addition to the profits?
