Wool E. Bull from the Durham Bulls Baseball Club came to visit, and he hit it out of the park! He danced; played rock, paper, scissors with patients; and gave tons of hugs. Many thanks for the awesome visit!

This Pi Day, our patients got the ultimate treat—pieing their providers right in the face! These moments say so much about the incredible relationships built here. When kids feel safe enough to laugh with their care team like this, you know something special is happening.

Huge shoutout to our providers who truly showed up (and took it like champs!)—your willingness to be playful, present, and human means everything to the kids and families you serve. 💙

Talk about a rare moment in North Carolina sports… 👀

The Blue Devil, Ramses Jr., and Mr. Wuf all showed up at Duke Children’s last week! Even the fiercest rivals can come together for one thing—bringing smiles to our patients and families during March Madness. 🏀

Thank you to these mascots for an unforgettable visit!

Parents of children with a rare heart birth defect called single-ventricle now have a clearer picture of the burdens their child will face, thanks to research lead by Duke Health.
The study followed more than 500 patients born with condition for over 16 years. It found that that only 12% reach adolescence without a major complication.

Duke Children’s Kevin Hill, M.D., the corresponding author of the study, said the findings also offer some hope, suggesting there are ways health care providers can tailor care to improve outcomes for the children.
The research introduces a global rank score, a measure developed with input from families that captures what matters most to them, including daily functioning, quality of life, and heart performance.

“These children need lifelong comprehensive care, including medical, developmental, and school support,” Hill said. “It’s not like they get surgery and are ‘fixed.’ Ongoing, coordinated services are essential to help them thrive.”

Hill is chief of division of pediatric cardiology and professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University School of Medicine.

Devlin, the Working@Duke Correspondent – a flat, cut-out companion who joins Duke staff and faculty at work and beyond – recently visited Lesley Stanford and her colleagues at Duke Children's.

“We loved this fun activity,” Stanford said. “We decided to take our official photo next to the LEGO model of the Duke Chapel in the lobby. We had so much fun planning the photo shoot, and we love working together.”

Devlin is joined by Pediatric Dieticians Holly Stanisce, Lesley Stanford, Caitlyn Pitre, Sierra Garza, and Bronwyn Cortez-Shekey, from left.

✨ It’s Child Life Month! ✨

This month, we’re celebrating our incredible Child Life Specialists and the vital role they play in supporting children and families throughout their healthcare journey at Duke Children’s.

Child Life Specialists help reduce fear and anxiety through therapeutic play, preparation and education for medical procedures and new diagnosis, emotional support during stressful moments, and advocacy for each child’s unique developmental and coping needs. They support not only patients, but families and healthcare teams—ensuring care is truly child- and family-centered.

Stay tuned this month as we highlight members of our child life team and the incredible work that they do!

When the Dark Side shows up… and somehow makes everything a little brighter 🖤✨

Today our hospital hallways were taken over by some iconic villains from a galaxy far, far away - dramatic capes, unmistakable helmets, and all. And right alongside them? The tallest, furriest fan favorite of all: Chewbacca, bringing gentle hugs (and a few very convincing Wookiee roars).

Our patients were wide-eyed, smiling, and fully immersed in the moment. Proof that even the Dark Side, and one very lovable Wookiee, can bring light when it matters most. Thank you to 501st Carolina Garrison!
