🚑 EXTREME COLD SAFETY ALERT (Thu, Jan 22, 2026)
The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook highlighting a significant excessive cold risk, with dangerously low wind chills.
Protect yourself + your family (hypothermia & frostbite prevention):
🧥 Dress in layers: moisture-wicking base layer + insulating middle + wind/water-resistant outer layer.
🧤 Cover exposed skin: hat, face covering, scarf, mittens/gloves, warm socks + insulated boots.
⏱️ Limit time outside: frostbite can happen fast—as little as ~10 minutes in these wind chills.
🚗 If you must travel: keep a winter kit (blanket, charger, gloves/hat, water/snacks) and tell someone your route.
Know the warning signs
❄️ Frostbite: numbness, tingling, pale/gray skin, “waxy” or hard skin.
➡️ Get inside, warm the area gently (warm water/body heat), don’t rub, and get medical help if severe.
🥶 Hypothermia: intense shivering, confusion, slurred speech, clumsiness, drowsiness.
➡️ Call 911, move to warmth, remove wet clothes, wrap in blankets, warm gradually.
🏠 Home safety (pipes + heat):
🚰 Prevent frozen pipes: let faucets drip, open cabinet doors under sinks, insulate exposed pipes, know where your main shutoff is.
🔥 Heat safely: keep space heaters 3+ feet from anything flammable; never use ovens/grills to heat indoors.
🐾 Pets:
Keep pets indoors and limit outdoor time.
❤️ Check on others:
Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors—especially anyone living alone or without reliable heat.
If it’s an emergency or you suspect hypothermia/frostbite: call 911.
