🎁 Germs After the Holidays: What Parents Should Know 🦠

The holidays bring new toys, family gatherings, and lots of fun—but they also bring extra germs. During cold, flu, RSV, and stomach bug season, a few simple habits can go a long way in keeping kids healthy.

🧼 Clean new and shared toys
Many germs can live on surfaces for hours or even days. Wipe down plastic and hard toys, wash stuffed animals when possible, and regularly clean toys that go straight into little mouths.

🙌 Handwashing still matters (a lot!)
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness. Use soap and water for 20 seconds—especially before eating, after playdates, and after using the bathroom.

🤧 Be mindful after gatherings
Viruses often spread before symptoms are obvious. If your child is feeling under the weather, it’s best to skip playdates and keep them home to protect others.

📞 Know when to call the pediatrician
Reach out if your child has a fever lasting more than 3 days, trouble breathing, signs of dehydration, or symptoms that are getting worse instead of better.

A little extra cleaning, handwashing, and awareness can help your family stay healthier this winter. And as always, we’re here when you need us 💙

4 reasons to be extra cautious during the holidays:

1. Not every home is childproofed like yours — and not every adult does the automatic “room scan” when they walk in (iykyk).
Toddlers are curious… and FAST.

Watch out for things like:
🔸 bookshelves
🔸 small decor/tchotchkes
🔸 hot drinks on low tables
🔸 handbags that may contain medications or button batteries(including hearing aid batteries)

2. Holiday chaos = distracted adults
Ironically, when *more* adults are around, supervision often drops.
It’s the same thing that happens at pools—everyone assumes someone else is watching.

3. High-risk foods are everywhere
Dried fruit, hard candy, marshmallows ‼️ POPCORN ‼️
Keep these out of reach and do not offer them to children under 4.

4. Decorations & gifts
Ornament hooks, ribbons, and packaging can be more tempting than the presents themselves.
Some gifts are choking hazards or contain button batteries.

Wearing winter coats in the car during the colder months can be dangerous for babies and young kids. If you get into an accident, the fluffy padding in a coat immediately flattens out from the force, leaving extra space under the harness and putting children at risk of being thrown from their seat. 🦠 RSV or a Common Cold? How to Tell the Difference
RSV and the common cold can look very similar at first, but RSV can be more serious—especially for young babies—because it can make breathing difficult. One of the best ways to help protect your baby this winter is through RSV immunization. The RSV shot provides antibodies that help your baby’s immune system recognize the virus and better fight it, supporting healthy growth and development.

If you have questions or concerns about RSV this season, talk with your child’s pediatrician—we’re here to help guide you.

Last Minute Holiday Illness Prevention
Cold, flu, and RSV cases often peak around the holidays. With kids out of school and families gathering, germs can spread quickly—but a few simple steps recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) can help lower the risk.

🙌 Handwashing still works
Handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is one of the most effective ways to prevent illness. Encourage kids to wash before eating, after playing with others, after coughing or sneezing, and when coming home from outings. Hand sanitizer is helpful when soap and water aren’t available.

🤧 Avoid close contact with sick individuals
It can be hard to say no during the holidays, but avoiding visits when someone is sick helps protect everyone—especially infants, young children, and grandparents. Even mild symptoms can spread viruses.

🏠 Know when to stay home
Keep your child home and skip gatherings if they have:
• Fever
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Worsening cough or breathing trouble
• Low energy or just “not acting like themselves”

Staying home helps your child recover faster and prevents illness from spreading to others.

🧼 Cover coughs and clean surfaces
Teach kids to cough or sneeze into their elbow and clean commonly touched surfaces like toys, doorknobs, and phones—especially after gatherings.

📞 Call your pediatrician if you’re unsure
If you’re not sure whether your child is okay to attend an event or needs to be seen, your pediatrician can help guide you.

A little prevention now can help your family enjoy the holidays with fewer sick days later. We’re here whenever you need us 💙

✈️🎄 Before Holiday Travel: A Pediatric Checklist

Traveling with kids during the holidays can be exciting—and stressful. A little preparation can go a long way in keeping your child healthy and your plans on track. We recommend these simple steps before heading out:

🧳 Pack all medications (and extras)
Bring daily medications, inhalers, EpiPens, and spacers—plus a little extra in case of delays. Keep medications in your carry-on so they’re always accessible.

🌡️ Don’t forget fever and pain reducers
Acetaminophen or ibuprofen (age-appropriate) can be helpful if a fever or discomfort starts while you’re away. Make sure dosing is correct for your child’s weight.

🧼 Hand hygiene is key
Crowded airports, cars, and family gatherings mean more germ exposure. Pack hand sanitizer, wipes, and encourage frequent handwashing—especially before eating.

😴 Protect sleep when you can
Overtired kids get sick more easily. Try to keep bedtimes and nap schedules as close to normal as possible, even while traveling.

🤧 Skip travel if your child is sick
If your child has a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or worsening respiratory symptoms, it’s best to stay home. Traveling while sick can delay recovery and spread illness to others.

📞 Know how to reach us!
Before you go, just remember we're only a call away!

A little planning now can help prevent illness, stress, and unexpected interruptions later. And if you’re unsure whether it’s safe to travel or need guidance before your trip, we’re always here to help 💙
