Eighty-one years ago today, Auschwitz was liberated. On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, people around the world take time to reflect on everything that the Holocaust has to teach us: the evil that was done and the depths to which humanity can sink, but also the compassion, bravery, and goodness that emerges even in the darkest of times.
Pastor Martin Niemรถller's famous poem -- decrying the cowardice of people in failing to stand up for persecuted communities during the rise of fascism in Germany in the 1930s -- remains tragically poignant today:
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
โ Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out
โ Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
โ Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me
โ and there was no one left to speak for me."
In recognition of this remembrance day, we're sharing a selection of books for children and teens about this difficult part of human history. These books, from picture books to novels to memoirs, tackle this sensitive subject with dignity, respect, and most importantly, hope.
