In 2024, one very special mare with reproductive limitations set the stage for something new at Tennessee Equine Hospital.

With the help of the incredible team at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, we brought advanced reproductive techniques to TEH through oocyte aspiration and Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection (ICSI).

Fast forward to today… this strong, healthy c**t is part of our very first round of ICSI success and is expected to be an exceptional show jumper.

Yesterday, Dr. Emily and Dr. Erin were able to see him for his new foal exam—bringing this journey full circle from innovation to outcome.

We’re proud to be part of moments like this. Where science, teamwork, and a little patience help create remarkable success stories!

Interested in having your mare aspirated? We will have availability May 26-27. Call us to schedule!

What exactly happens during a newborn foal exam? And why does it matter so much? We’ll tell you!

Ideally, within the first 12 hours after birth, a veterinarian will perform a thorough check of your foal from nose to tail. This includes listening to the heart and lungs, checking eyes and reflexes, evaluating limb alignment, and making sure the foal is nursing well and staying hydrated. They’ll also examine the navel to help prevent infection and assess the mare to be sure everything is progressing normally.

One of the most important parts of this visit is testing your foal’s IgG levels (ideally around 12 hours after birth). This simple stall side blood test measures whether your foal has absorbed enough antibodies from colostrum to build a strong immune defense. If IgG levels are low (known as failure of passive transfer) the foal is at a much higher risk for serious illness.

The good news is that when caught early, low IgG can often be corrected quickly and effectively. That’s why timing is everything. This test is most accurate and useful within the first day of life.

A newborn exam isn’t just routine—it’s a critical step in protecting your foal during their most vulnerable stage and setting them up for a healthy future.

On National Farm Animals Day, we’re reminded why we do what we do.

Horses give us their trust without question, and our job is to make sure that trust is never misplaced. Every exam, every call, every late night… it all comes back to one thing: providing the care they deserve.

Shedding season is here! Your horse should begin losing their winter coat in late March through early April.

If your horse (especially those 15+) is still holding onto a thick or delayed coat, it could be a sign of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Cushing’s disease, a common hormonal disorder in older equines. Early diagnosis and management are key to keeping horses healthy and comfortable.
