Recomendaciones clave:

• Mantener niveles de glucosa dentro de metas médicas.
• Controlar presión arterial y colesterol.
• No fumar.
• Revisar los pies diariamente.
• Acudir a revisión médica periódica.
• Usar calzado adecuado.

Conjunctivitis, casually referred to as “pink eye”, is a swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thick, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. Varying causes may or may not be contagious.

Diabetic retinopathy symptoms often do not appear in the early stages, making regular eye exams crucial for diagnosis. As damage progresses, symptoms typically include blurry or fluctuating vision, dark spots/floaters, poor night vision, and washed-out colors. Left untreated, it can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

Strabismus is a common, treatable eye condition—affecting 2–4% of children—where eyes are misaligned (crossed, wandering, or turning in/out/up/down) due to poor muscle control, neurological issues, or severe farsightedness. Symptoms include visible misalignment, double vision, and reduced depth perception. Treatment involves eyeglasses, eye patching, vision therapy, or surgery.

Main Causes & Risk Factors
Neuromuscular Control: Improper coordination of the six eye muscles.
Refractive Errors: Severe, uncorrected farsightedness (hyperopia).
Health Conditions/Injuries: Stroke, head injuries, or infections.

Genetics: A family history of strabismus.
Developmental Factors: Higher prevalence in children with Down syndrome or cerebral palsy, and often linked to autism.

Symptoms of Strabismus
Eyes that appear misaligned (inward, outward, upward, or downward).
Double vision (diplopia).
Squinting or closing one eye in bright sunlight.
Head tilting or turning to see clearly.
Poor depth perception.

Treatment Approaches
Eyeglasses/Contact Lenses: For cases caused by uncorrected vision.
Patching/Eye Drops: To treat accompanying amblyopia (lazy eye).
Vision Therapy: Eye exercises to improve coordination.
Eye Muscle Surgery: Adjusting the muscles to straighten the eyes, often necessary for permanent correction.

Prognosis
Early diagnosis is crucial, as untreated strabismus in children can lead to permanent reduced vision (amblyopia). With prompt treatment, the prognosis is excellent for achieving better alignment and vision. While often appearing in early childhood, it can be treated effectively at any age.

Retinal detachment is a medical emergency characterized by sudden, painless vision changes, including a dramatic increase in floaters, flashes of light, and a dark, curtain-like shadow obscuring vision. Immediate evaluation by an ophthalmologist is critical to prevent permanent vision loss.
