Google and Apple probably didn’t anticipate all the competition when Android Wear and the Apple Watch were released, they were the most advanced wearables around town. Now, they blend into an increasingly advanced landscape of wireless biometric devices that can monitor heart rate, posture, sleep patterns, elevation, steps, brain activity and a litany of other metrics. You don’t even need a heart strap or smart watch if the devices you already wear become smarter. [ 308 more words ]

The question is a similar one to many other areas that are crucial for our overall health and wellbeing, but are also not covered, such as dental and vision. In a nutshell, Medicare doesn’t extend coverage far beyond the reach of physicians. Physicians don’t typically manage hearing aids, dental and vision issues, but when they do, Medicare is often involved. Take for example Cochlear Implants which is a hearing healthcare procedure that is covered. [ 273 more words ]

The world of hearing is innovating faster than ever. Some of the recent breakthroughs are still limited in their ability to help everyone, such as the Stanford stem cell treatment for repairing damaged cells, but their results are still preliminary. Other studies provide potentially better solutions than the ones that currently exist, such as vagus nerve stimulation to treat tinnitus… [ 510 more words ]

As most people know, hearing loss is a terrible affliction, but most hearing loss is preventable. Reducing your exposure to loud, ear damaging noise is the best way to maintain your hearing health into old age. The problem is that most people don’t think about hearing protection until it’s already too late. Leaving a concert or sporting event with ringing ears is a sign of permanent damage. Have you ever stood outside for 5 minutes and observed all the noise around you? Cars driving by, a construction site nearby, a lawn mower of a nearby neighbor, a fire truck rushing to its call, a motorcycle revving its engine, music playing from someone’s car: try and count how many different sound you can hear. Workforce Magazine recently reported that nearly 92% of companies do not include hearing health in their employee wellness programs. Employee wellness programs are plans offered to the employee by an employer, usually with an incentive, such as preventative health screenings, weight loss programs, healthy living coaching and other health related programs. Wellness programs are used to increase employee happiness as well as lower health risks and health-related costs. [ 246 more words. ]

We've discussed how supplements might help with some types of hearing loss before, but now researchers examined an alternative dietary supplement that would ultimately improve the overall health of cells in the cochlea. ACEMg is a dietary supplement that consists of beta-carotene (Vitamin A), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Magnesium. A new study reveals that ACEMg reduces the progression of hearing loss in mice. Buying an inexpensive hearing solution through the mail, on-line, or even over-the-counter without having an audiological evaluation by an audiologist isn’t a shortcut to an affordable hearing solution. When patients try to treat their hearing difficulties without a proper diagnosis by an audiologist, they are potentially wasting money by buying inexpensive hearing devices that are not warranted, or worse, they are ignoring a much more serious problem, that if it goes undiagnosed, could lead to a severe health issue. A recent article in The Hearing Journal that discusses mental health and hearing loss caught my attention. According to a National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders report, 11.4% of participants with moderate to severe depression, also experienced a little trouble hearing, or a greater hearing impairment. While it is tough to correlate directly hearing loss and depression, audiologists can play a significant role in helping their patients identify the signs of mental health disorders as well as seek appropriate treatment. Va**ng, or electronic ci******es, is the newest trend, especially in the younger generations. Nearly 2.4 million teens use electronic ci******es, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although many people believe that e-ci******es are safer than actual ci******es, there have been proven risks associated with the newest fad that may not make them a “safer” alternative. Ci******es, among their countless health hazards, have also been linked to hearing loss. [ 250 more words. ]
