…the suffix “-itis” means inflammation or a disease characterized by inflammation?

It can be something acute like laryngitis or something chronic like hepatitis. One of the earliest uses of “-itis” in English was “arthritis” in the 1500s, meaning inflammation of the joints. And then we got:

🌿Colitis: inflammation of the colon
🌿Periodontitis: inflammation of the
gums
🌿Gastritis: inflammation of the
stomach
🌿Tendonitis: inflammation of the
tendons
🌿Bronchitis: inflammation of the
bronchial tubes
