Compassion is aimed at alleviating suffering and can be ferocious as well as tender, “yin” as well as “yang”—the mother gently comforting her crying child or the mother bear fiercely protecting her cubs.
The three core components of self-compassion are self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness of suffering. These manifest in “yin” self-compassion as loving, connected presence. But self-compassion also has a “yang” form. With yang self-compassion, the three components show up as fierce, empowered truth.
When we hold our pain with fierce, empowered truth, we can speak up and tell our stories, to protect ourselves and others from being harmed.
Both aspects of self-compassion lead to well-being.

It is thought that the adolescent brain does not fully develop until a person is 25 years of age.
Among the many behavior changes that have been noted for teens, three are seen across cultures: 1) increased novelty seeking; 2) increased risk taking; and 3) a social affiliation shift toward peer based interactions.
As difficult as dealing with teenagers can be, try to project unconditional love, create safe social interactions, know what your teen is doing, who your teen is with (double check) and who their parents are (show up).

Our world seems to be roiling in prejudice, in nationalism, in accusations, in anger, in fear, in greed getting its way, in breaking the law, in tearing up agreements with friends and cozying up to enemies.
There’s an easy way to fix it: vote.
Vote. That’s it.
Use your anger and heartbreak and trauma for good: vote and, now, right now, today, message your friends and acquaintances and colleagues.
Use your energy to effect change—channel it, don’t waste it in anger.

Observing the present moment with nonjudgmental awareness allows you to approach both the good and the bad days with gratitude and compassion. With mindful awareness, the future and the past become less invasive.

If your skeletons are packed away but your holiday decorations are already creeping out, you’re in good company (we see you, early decorators...this is a judgment-free zone).
