Gene Donald Steichen

On February 14, 2026, the world became less funny and entertaining with the passing of Dubuque native Gene Steichen. Though residing in Los Angeles for nearly 40 years, it was Iowa that he called home and it is Dubuque where he will rest. There are no words to describe the brilliance of Gene. Adjectives such as eccentric, quirky, and unique fall woefully short of capturing the essence of Gene. He leaves us with a legacy of laughter, creativity, and strength. He pursued a life full of travel and adventure. He had a passion for the arts from Blues to Broadway, a love of all sports, including his lifelong affair with the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Gene’s bucket list was empty at the end of each year. One such item was a more difficult box to check than most. He entered and completed the Los Angeles Marathon. His only pre-race training was abstaining from Corn Flakes for 2 weeks. He announced his retirement from competitive racing while crossing the finish line. His journeys resulted in witnessing many epic Packer games, nearly every Broadway show, 4 Hawkeye Rose Bowls and game 7 of the historic Cubs 2016 World Series victory. He possessed a true zest for life. His travel companion and side kick for many of life’s adventures was Mother Juanita. It was not uncommon to see the pair at a play on Friday, an Iowa Football game on Saturday and a concert on Sunday. Later in life it was rare to see one without the other as together they consumed their interests and love of family, arts and sports. At a very young age Gene dove headfirst into being a member of the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps where he marched for most of his adolescence. He was a member until his age out at 21. Decades later he was voted into the Colts Hall of Fame. Gene’s Dubuque education included graduating from St Anthony’s Elementary School in 1975 and Hempstead High School in 1979. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1984. At Iowa he was a member of the Marching Band for one year during the 1981/1982 season. As fate and good fortune would have it the band played in the 1982 Rose Bowl after Hayden Fry and the Iowa Hawkeyes won the Big 10 Championship, breaking a 23-year drought. Next, he graduated from the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. After graduation he pursued an acting career. He performed in numerous sitcoms and television productions. He became prolific in national television commercials such as Snickers and E-Trade, including an E-Trade commercial that he starred in during Super Bowl 35. His professional break came when he was cast as the Leaf for Fruit of the Loom. This award-winning franchise lasted nearly 10 years resulting in some epic and memorable commercials. He was a proud and active member of the Screen Actors Guild of America for 35 years. Gene was a friend of Bill, recently celebrating 18 years of being sober at the Doghouse Bill Team. He gave back to his gift of sobriety by being involved in many volunteer endeavors including being a life counselor at LA County Jail where he taught the benefits of living a sober and spiritual life. Gene was preceded in death by his father Glen, a 42-year teacher with the Dubuque Community School District and his mother Juanita, a combined 37-year nursing career with Xavier and Mercy. Also preceded by grandparents, Donald and Juanita Connor of Galena, and Nicholas and Margaret Steichen of Dubuque. Gene and his siblings are exceptionally close friends. The survivors are Cindy Steichen of Denver, John Steichen of Omaha and Dawn Buscher of Dallas. Also included on this sibling list is Dawn’s husband, Richard Buscher. Nieces and nephews include Kayla Kenyon of Denver, Casey Buscher and soon to be husband, Daniel Goldberg, of Dallas, Connor Buscher and his partner, Katelyn Kennedy of Dallas, and Connor Steichen of Omaha. Also survived by Juanita’s sister, Kathleen “Cassie” Hollatz (Tom). Cassie is Gene’s aunt, godmother, and close friend. Cassie remains a regular participant in the Steichen Family Traveling Road Show. Gene was also survived by numerous aunts and cousins.

In lieu of flowers or gifts the family asks that any donation be made in Gene’s honor at Colt’s Youth Organization 2300 Twin Valley Drive Dubuque IA 52003.

A Celebration of Gene is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Culbie’s Event Center, 90 Sinsinawa Ave, East Dubuque, from Noon to 3 pm. Details to follow. The family prays that their broken hearts will mend by all the adoration and support showered upon Gene from the people who knew and loved him. God bless Gene Steichen.

Lois Jean Sprayberry

Lois Jean (Williams) Sprayberry, of East Dubuque, IL, received her well-deserved angel wings on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, IL. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 9, 2026, with Deacon Mike Timmerman officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Lois was born on August 27, 1949, in Dubuque, IA, daughter of Harry and Loretta (Bettcher) Williams. She grew up in East Dubuque and graduated from Wahlert High School in 1967.

As a young girl, Lois loved riding her horse, Rowdy, and participated in local rodeos. She was able to board Rowdy at The Vandermillen’s right behind her home on Hill Street.

In her early 20s she traveled to Missouri with friends for a vacation and that is where she met James “Jim” Sprayberry, a tall handsome Texas man with the accent to match. After Lois returned home from that trip thinking she would never see that tall drink of water ever again, somehow, someway, Jim found his way to East Dubuque, and showed up on the porch of Lois’ childhood home. They were married on November 11, 1974, at Grandview Heights Baptist Church, Dubuque.

Lois worked for a time at Montgomery Wards until Jim was offered a fantastic job opportunity while working on the movie set of F.I.S.T. in Dubuque. In 1977, they moved to Van Nuys, California, and later to Simi Valley. While living out west Lois started up a catering company that would provide meals to the movie crew and actors.

The movie industry allowed Lois to travel with Jim all over California and to Hawaii, where the movie “Last Flight of Noah’s Ark” was filmed staring Elliot Gould and Ricky Schroeder. Another adventure was spent in Boston while filming “Spencer for Hire.” Lois’ most memorable time was spent during the production of the 1985 miniseries “North and South” which was filmed in South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. She would tell stories about catering to the cast and on many occasions ate dinner with Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley.

Wanting a new adventure, Lois went back to school and became a nail technician and also sold Mary Kay Cosmetics. Although she didn’t get her pink Cadillac, she settled for a powder blue one and later traded it in for the classic black that her Daddy (Harry) called the “Ghetto Blaster.” Upon purchasing a new home in Simi Valley, Lois decided try out another new endeavor and became a real estate agent for Century 21 for a bit.

Later the higher powers intervened and led Lois and Jim back to East Dubuque, to be closer to family in May, 1999. They cherished memories that were made in a short time with her parents. Harry passed away on November 2, 2000, and not too long after by her mother, Loretta, on April 12, 2001. Then without warning the call came that Jim passed away in the sleeper of his semi in California, on February 18, 2002.

Lois was an incredibly strong, loving, kind and giving woman and became a mother figure to her nieces and a grandmother to her great-nephews and nieces. There was never a dull moment when “E.O.” was around, especially giving tractor rides, going to the Dells, frosting cookies, coloring Easter Eggs, shopping trips and those many morning breakfast trips to Burger King and McDonalds.

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she faced it head on and never let it define her, nor did she ever complain. And when she was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time in 2009, she fought it even harder. Lois however wasn’t able to knock out the demons of brain encephalopathy when they invaded in her mind and body in 2019, causing the wonderful person so many grew to love slowly fade away.

Those left to keep her spunky spirit alive are her brother, Kevin Williams, of East Dubuque, IL; two nieces/daughters, Tracy (John) Loso-Noel, of Dubuque, IA, and Tiffany (Ron) McAndrew-Willenbring, of Peosta, IA; great-nephews/grandsons, Brandon Noel and Justin Noel, both of Dubuque, IA, two great-nieces/granddaughters, Morgan Noel, of Dubuque, IA, and Peyton Willenbring, of Peosta, IA; niece, Lesley Ann Potter, of Dubuque, IA; stepson, John Sprayberry, of Winnebago, IL; a brother-in-law, Pat McAndrew, of Dubuque, IA; step-grandchildren, aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins.

Lois was also preceded in death by her sister, Pamela Ann (Williams) McAndrew, on September 16, 1985; an infant brother, James; and a stepson, James “Randy” Sprayberry, on December 26, 2013.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor, Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque for the care and love they gave Lois over the last 6 years.

Virginia Ann Sly

Virginia Ann Sly began her earthly journey on June 5, 1927, in Peoria, IL. A few minutes later, her identical twin sister, Betty, joined her. They would travel this world for the next 98 years, not always together, but not always apart. Their parents were Flossie and Earl Lapier. Sadly, Flossie became a single parent when the girls were only six months old, as Earl died on January 28, 1928.

Flossie raised her daughters in Peoria, where they led an active life in their Methodist church, graduated from Manual High School, and both attended a secretarial school after graduation. Their first job was at a hotel in Chicago, both taking turns getting people to and from various floors on the hotel’s elevator. Later, Virginia worked at a law firm in downtown Chicago. She eventually met Maurice Sly at a church camp in Michigan. They were married in the Chicago Methodist Temple on May 24, 1952. Her sister, Betty, was also married that same year in October to Richard Steele.

1952 was the year Betty and Virginia took different paths in life. Betty stayed in the Chicago area while Virginia and Mo settled in Denver, CO. Their son Kenneth was born in Denver, but when Mo graduated from the University of Denver, they moved to Clairton, PA. Wanting to utilize his newly acquired business degree, he managed a cafeteria at a steel mill in the town of Clairton. It was in nearby McKeesport that their daughter, Barbara, was born on Virginia’s 28th birthday. Two years later, the family moved back to the Denver area and bought a house in Arvada, CO. It was there that two more daughters, Sharon and Julie, were added to the family. Virginia would live in the same house in Arvada for the next 62 years.

Virginia was actively involved as her family grew over the years. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher for disabled students, active in her Presbyterian church women’s group, and volunteered at the local food pantry and senior center. She worked for many years as an office manager for her church and an upholstery company.

Virginia’s leisure time was spent camping with her family. There were trips in the mountains and a variety of summer vacations. As their four children left home, Virginia and Mo invested in a camping trailer and traveled over 8,000 miles, eventually visiting all fifty states.
