"We Solve Vision Problems"

Advanced Practice Clinical Optometry

We offer comprehensive eye exams for all ages, high performance contact lenses (including terrific multifocal contact lenses with great distance AND near vision), eyeglasses, sunglasses, computer eyestrain relief, medical treatment of eye infections and diseases including glaucoma, dry eye, allergies and the removal of foreign objects from eyes. Our mission is to safeguard our patients' vision throughout their lives. Our motto is "We Solve Vision Problems". Many times, our patients don't even know they have a vision problem so it is up to us to identify the problem and solve it. We change lives for the better every day. Medical eye problems can be devastating as we age. Cataracts and glaucoma are treatable if identified early. Macular degeneration can lead to functional blindness if not caught early. We diagnose, treat and refer to sub-specialists when necessary. Systemic medical conditions can have eye manifestations. We can diagnose diabetes, hypertension and even brain tumors and increased intracranial pressure by looking into your eye during an eye exam. Annual optometric care safeguards your vision and can save your life. Our office was founded in Middletown over 76 years ago by the late George W. Palmer, OD and has remained true to his vision of treating our patients like family. The Palmer Eyecare Center with Jeffrey M. Palmer, OD, and now with Martin L. Hellman, OD is the area's oldest, private optometric practice and family eyecare center. We are privileged to have been entrusted to safeguard the vision of so many tens of thousands of area residents for over 76 years. Your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents may have gotten their eyes examined and their eyeglasses from us. Call for an appointment and find out why. We are open by appointment weekdays. Please call 860-267-2222 to make an appointment.

Summer is the best time of the year to be wearing contact lenses for just about everyone. Eyeglasses can slip, fall off, get wet in the rain and fog up. That never happens with contact lenses.

With sharper vision than eyeglasses and a wider field of view (no eyeglass frame to get in the way), it is no wonder that just about every pro athlete in the world wears contact lenses. You can have that same exceptional vision too!

Contact lenses correct just about every refractive eye condition like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. They are also available in bifocal prescriptions for wearers over 40-years old who are struggling to see up close. You can get distance AND near vision with contact lenses.

Best of all, the newest materials now have built-in wetting drops that lubricate your eyes every time you blink while you are wearing the lenses for all day comfort.

If you have been wearing the same brand of contact lenses for more than 5 years, there may be better and more comfortable lens options for you, especially if you notice that your lenses dry out later in the day, if vision fluctuates or if it's hard for you to remove them. We have free trials of the new lenses for you to demo when you come in for your annual contact lens exam.

Call us to set up an appointment and experience the newest, most comfortable lenses in the world. Call 860-267-2222 today.

We are contact lenses specialists and have been since soft lenses were invented over 50 years ago. We custom fit contact lenses to patients from 10-years old through their 80s. Everyone deserves terrific vision. And no one has to drop out.

WE FILL EYEGLASS PRESCRIPTIONS TOO! The Palmer Eyecare Center has licensed opticians always available to help fill your eyeglass prescriptions. With over 1,500 eyeglass frames in stock for you to try on from dozens of designers worldwide, you may want to bring a friend to help choose which eyeglass frame looks best on you. Our expert fashionista eyeglass consultants are here to help you too.

03/23/2024

ECLIPSE MANIA is in full swing! The partial eclipse of the sun on April 8 will be the first in our area in over 7 years. If weather is cooperating, everyone should have an opportunity to see the moon block out about 70% of the sun’s light in the middle of the day. It is an incredible celestial event that many of us will never have the opportunity to see again.

What is the safest way to see this incredible sight? Number one: Unless you have a pair of approved eclipse glasses, DON’T LOOK DIRECTLY AT IT! Looking directly into the sun can cause irreversible damage to the retina in less than 30 second. The solar burn on your retina will leave a blind spot right in the middle of your vision for the rest of your life. IT WILL NOT HEAL. If you have children, make sure they don’t look at the sun either. If they have the approved eclipse glasses, be certain that they are using them correctly, not looking over or under them and holding them firmly in place when viewing the sun. BLINDNESS IS FOREVER! Do not take a chance with your vision or your child’s vision.

THE SAFEST WAY TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE: I will be watching it (remember, we NEVER look directly at the sun) with a plain pair of drugstore reading glasses. Buy a pair of cheap +1.00 or +1.25 reading glasses anywhere you can find one. You may even have a pair or two at home right now. With the sun behind you over your shoulder, hold the reading glasses close to the ground and then carefully lift them about 3’ off the ground. You should be watching the image on the ground in the sunlight in front of you, not in your shadow. The image of the sun will come into a super clear focus on the ground when you are holding the reading glasses about 3’ away from the ground or about waist height. You will be able to see the entire eclipse on the ground with no risk of damaging your eyes. Depending on the power of the reading glasses, the image of the sun on the ground will be about the size of a quarter.

Keep in mind that regular sunglasses will not protect against retinal damage when looking directly into the sun. Use one of the methods above to safeguard your vision.

Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the majesty of a solar eclipse, one of the rare magnificent events in our solar system. Let’s just make sure that it is not the LAST thing you ever see. Be wise with your eyes.

If you would like to learn more about protecting your eyes and improving your vision, like us on our page Palmer Eyecare Center . And if you have friends and family members who would like to SAFELY view the eclipse, just SHARE this message.

Do you have a MEDICARE ADVANTAGE plan?

If you do, you may have been given a Flex health credit card to use for vision, dental or hearing expenses. Or you may have eyeglass benefits built into your plan.

If you don't use the Flex card, you will forfeit the funds in it at the end of the year. In some cases, that's $500 for one person or $1,000 for a couple that will be permanently lost. It could be a new pair of eyeglasses for both of you.

Better vision helps everyone throughout their life. In fact, a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that SENIORS with compromised vision suffered from a significantly higher rate of dementia and falls than those with sharp vision. So we can conclude that better vision throughout an individual's life will result in a consistently better quality of life.

Sharp vision also helps with balance and dizziness problems. If you ever see annoying double images, we can compensate for the eye misalignment that causes double vision if the eye muscles are not working together.

After 65-years old, everybody should have a comprehensive eye exam once a year to make sure that their eyes are healthy and to update their eyeglass prescription for the sharpest vision possible at all distances.

Your Medicare insurance will cover the cost of your eye exam, which examines your eyes for signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and a host of other medical conditions that can affect vision as we age. Additionally, your eyeglass prescription is fine tuned to give you exceptionally clear vision at all distances. The funds on that Flex health credit card will cover a new pair of multifocal eyeglasses so you will be seeing as sharp and clear as possible at all distances.

So if you are over 65-years old and on Medicare, you already have the eye exam benefit. If you have an Advantage Plan, you also have an eyeglass benefit. Why not make an appointment at the Palmer Eyecare Center in East Hampton to make sure that your eyes are healthy and that your eyeglasses are as sharp as they can be? Call us at 860-267-2222 to set up an appointment with one of our very friendly receptionists. We can usually get you an appointment within a week.

We've been safeguarding our patients' vision for over 77 years and have seen tens of thousands of local patients and many generations of families during that time.

Call 860-267-2222 now. Treat yourself to terrific vision and protect your eyes and eyesight.

PS We also treat problems with dry and scratchy eyes, which become much more common as we all get older. You don't have to suffer.

Are you DIABETIC or have MACULAR DEGENERATION? (Or a family history of either?) Please read this now.

There is a specific group of plant derived antioxidants that are naturally found in the eye and body. Studies show that if the concentration of these antioxidants is low, diabetic retinopathy (leakage) and macular degeneration appear to progress at faster rates. These conditions can have devastating effects on vision. Higher levels of these antioxidants have been shown to slow or almost stop progression. Up until now, it has been very difficult to accurately measure the concentration of these antioxidants in the body. With supplementation, it is possible to increase the concentration of the antioxidants to safer levels.

We will have a new research device in our office in East Hampton THIS MONDAY MORNING that can measure the levels of these specific antioxidants in your body by looking at the pigment in your finger. You just put your finger on a sensor and it scans the skin. It is non-invasive and just takes a couple minutes.

If you are diabetic, have macular degeneration OR have a family history of either condition, you can have a FREE SCREENING to measure the levels of these antioxidants in your body.

We realize this is very short notice. We only have 20 spots available on Monday morning to measure your antioxidant levels. Lower levels of these antioxidants suggest that the conditions may worsen over time, possibly causing degradation or loss of usable vision.

To reserve a spot, call us ASAP at 860-267-2222. If you call over the weekend, we will call back first thing Monday morning. First come, first served. If you know someone who might benefit from this screening, please share the information with them.

We are fortunate to be able to offer this first of its kind diagnostic test device in East Hampton. There is no charge. You do not have to be a patient at the Palmer Eyecare Center. We are just recruiting at-risk individuals to establish a baseline level of these antioxidants to determine who may be at risk for future progression of the disease.

It is important to know your risk of future vision problems from these diseases which are challenging to control.

Call us at 860-267-2222 to reserve a spot.

Did You Know……

DIABETICS: We have the highest resolution imaging system available to look at your retina for the earliest signs of diabetic changes. The eye is the only part of the body where we can see arteries and veins and nerves under normal conditions without opening you up. And it's painless. You can help control your diabetes by monitoring the eye for diabetic changes every year.

MIGRAINE SUFFERERS: There are now therapeutic eyeglass lenses available that may help stop a migraine before it starts or help it fade away faster. Based on a study from Harvard University, these lenses absorb wavelengths (colors) of light that aggravate migraines and transmit the ones that don’t. If you experience severe light sensitivity during a migraine, these lenses may be as effective as medications.

INSOMNIA SUFFERERS: If it’s hard for you to get to sleep or stay asleep, there are now eyeglass lenses that block the wavelengths of light that have been shown to interfere with going to sleep and staying asleep. Wearing these lenses for at least 2 hours before bed helps the brain prepare to release natural sleep hormones to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Studies at Tulane University have identified the offending wavelengths, so special light filtering lenses can eliminate them. They are similar to the “Blue Blocking” lenses that have helped so many users computer users relieve eyestrain.

FLOATER SUFFERERS: Floaters are those annoying, shadowy spots that many people see in their vision that move away whenever you look at them. Most people have them. Some are annoying; some really interfere with vision. A study from Ireland concluded that almost 70% of participants who took a new once-a-day supplement reported a reduction or elimination of floaters after 6 months of use. Our office can identify your floaters with our retinal imaging systems as you follow the study protocol for at least 6 months.

BOATERS: Have you ever watched a pair of sunglasses go overboard and sink out of sight to the bottom of the lake or ocean? There are now sunglasses that FLOAT! With polarized lenses from 3M, these wraparound sunglasses can’t sink. You still have to fish them out of the water though. Polarizing lenses are the best for fishing because the lenses eliminate reflected glare off the water. There are also floating eyeglass cords that will help keep your sunglasses near the surface if they fall in.

LIGHT SENSITIVITY SUFFERERS: Summertime means more sun and brighter sun. There are new generations of Transitions lenses that get darker outdoors (and even in cars). The ultraviolet wavelengths in sunlight power the lenses to darken in seconds! And when you go inside, they lighten up completely in a couple minutes. Our neutral density light filtering can improve the quality of life for anyone who is sensitive to bright light.

HEADACHE, VERTIGO, DOUBLE VISION and CAR SICKNESS SUFFERERS: Calibrating your vision so that the vision is crystal clear at all distances AND that your eyes are precisely aiming exactly where they are supposed to aim helps most of these problems go away.

…..and that just scratches the surface of what we offer at the Palmer Eyecare Center.

If you have any questions about these new products and services or for an appointment, please contact us at 860-267-2222.

Warmer weather means brighter sun and more opportunities to experience headaches, migraines and more stress to the visual system. There are many components to your visual system that must ALL be functioning perfectly to achieve sharp, clear, focused 20/20 vision with excellent depth perception. If even one part of the visual system is off, you may experience headaches, vertigo, double vision, car sickness or the inability to focus at all distances.

WE FIX THAT with eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some medical eye problems may require a visit to a specialist to address surgical or retinal issues. We diagnose all of those vision problems and coordinate your care with the specialists. It's always better to have two doctors on your team safeguarding your vision.

Dry or itchy eyes? It's allergy season. Pink or red eyes? We see a lot of that once bathers start to use their pools or head to the lake. WE FIX THAT too.

Just call us at 860-267-2222 to set up an appointment.
