It’s International Survivors of Su***de Loss Day, and it’s also a day to raise awareness about the realities people with bipolar disorder face. Awareness isn’t fear-based—awareness is love, prevention, compassion, and connection. My best friend Andrew, who chose to end his story on 3/12/23, and my ex-boyfriend, Erik, who ended his story on 4/9/14, were two of the most incredible men I’ve ever known. Andrew and Erik both struggled with the stigmas that surrounded their bipolar diagnoses; in spite of their pain, they were unashamed of what they carried and took help that was offered to them in hopes of better days. I would not be where I am today without either of them, and I will never stop sharing their stories.
Here are three truths we must talk about:
📌 Up to 50% of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt su***de at least once in their lifetime.
📌 People with bipolar disorder are 10–30x more likely to die by su***de than the general population.
📌 As many as 20% of individuals with bipolar disorder die by su***de, giving this diagnosis one of the highest su***de-related risks in mental health.
These numbers are not destiny.
They’re a reminder of the importance of consistent support, accessible treatment, early intervention, and reducing stigma so people feel safe reaching out.
