“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” — Maya Angelou

Today, we pause with gratitude for the lives that continue to shape us through love, service, and memory. Even in loss, the connections we share endure — bringing comfort, reflection, and togetherness when we need it most.

Holding all who are remembering someone dear close in our thoughts.

As we care for families in our community, we pause to honor the lives of those entrusted to us at the East Lansing Chapel. Each name carries a story, a family, and a legacy of love.

Please join us in keeping these families close in your thoughts and prayers:

• Kathryn Kay Kevern
• William Douglas Ottinger
• Domingo Paul Bentley
• Theresa Arlene Nouhan
• Marjorie Ellen Hogle
• Dale Quentin Fitschen
• Patricia Ann Herring Jackson
• Ava Grace Renfer

Every life remembered here represents someone deeply loved and forever cherished. It is our honor to walk alongside their families with care, compassion, and respect.

When Gorsline-Runciman’s East Lansing Chapel opened in December 1962, the announcements that followed in the following months didn’t focus solely on square footage or architectural details.

Instead, this January 1963 ad offered a reflection.

The words describe a “country home” — not as a place, but as an idea: a setting marked by quiet, thoughtfulness, and conscience. It speaks to cleanliness, comfort, and a sense of rest that comes with time and care.

In the weeks after the chapel opened at 1730 East Grand River, this message helped explain its purpose: to create a space that felt calm, sincere, and grounded — a place meant to support families during moments of reflection and remembrance.

More than 60 years later, that intention still shapes the East Lansing Chapel.

As we approach Giving Tuesday, we’re reminded that this season is not only about gratitude, but also about compassion, remembrance, and caring for one another.

At Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, our mission has always centered on honoring lives, supporting families, and strengthening the communities we serve. Giving Tuesday is a beautiful opportunity to extend that spirit of care even further.

Here are a few heartfelt ways to take part:

Do something kind in a loved one’s honor
A small gesture — a meal delivered, a kind note, a moment of support — can carry great meaning when done in memory of someone special.

Share a memory
If you feel comfortable, share a favorite story or moment about your loved one and tag our chapel page. We’ll be sharing these throughout the week as a way to celebrate the love that continues.

Support local organizations
Consider giving to a community nonprofit, grief resource, or elder care program in honor of someone important to you.

Reach out to someone who may be struggling
Sometimes generosity looks like a simple message, a phone call, or checking in on someone who may be carrying grief quietly.

Giving Tuesday is on Tuesday, December 2 this year, and we hope it inspires moments of kindness, healing, and connection throughout our community.
