To implement the student loan provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), the U.S. Department of Education (ED) has proposed a definition of a "professional degree" program that does not include audiology or speech-language pathology. This definition determines eligibility for student lifetime loan limits—$100,000 for graduate students versus $200,000 for "professional degree" students. More information about this proposal and the impact it would have on students is available in the ASHA Advocacy Newspiece on Professional Degree Loan Limits: https://www.asha.org/news/2025/proposed-definition-of-professional-degree-programs-would-exclude-audiology-and-speech-language-pathology/

Act now! Ensuring that communication sciences and disorders (CSD) students have access to “professional degree” loan limits is vital to maintaining access for those entering these important programs. Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to urge the Department of Education to adopt a definition of “professional degree” program that includes graduate audiology and speech-language pathology programs. ASHA members may complete this form to contact members of congress: https://ashaa.quorum.us/campaign/loanlimits119/
