Cannabis & Mental Health: What We Don’t Talk About Enough
Cannabis is often seen as “natural” and harmless but when it comes to mental health, the picture is more complex.
For some people, cannabis may temporarily reduce anxiety or help with sleep. But over time or at higher doses, it can actually worsen:
-Anxiety and panic
-Depression and low motivation
-Attention and focus (especially in ADHD)
-Emotional regulation
-Sleep quality
In certain individuals, especially those with a personal or family history of mental health conditions, cannabis use can also increase the risk of:
-Psychosis
-Mood instability
-Dependency
What’s important is this: cannabis affects everyone differently. The same substance that “helps” one person may significantly worsen symptoms for another.
If you are using cannabis, ask:
-What are you hoping it helps with?
-What actually happens after you use it?
-Are symptoms improving… or just temporarily masked?
Harm reduction, education, and honest conversations matter more than judgment.
And trust me I don’t judge but it is a balancing act on what is working and what is not, as a medication provider, if my patients are not responding to certain medication treatments and cannabis use is still prominent then that is when we really need to take a deeper dive into maybe limiting usage.
Mental health care isn’t about telling people what to do, it’s about helping them understand how their choices affect their mind and body.
