One week post-DST and is your child on the 5 AM early-riser schedule? 😩 You are NOT alone!

“Falling back” can really mess with a child’s circadian rhythm, leading to grumpy evenings and sunrise wake-ups. ⏰ As pediatric therapists, we know consistency is key to resetting their internal clock!

If you’re still fighting the early wake-up battle, try these 3 tips this weekend:
1. 🌅 Maximize Morning Light: Open curtains and get outside immediately! Bright light signals the brain: time to WAKE UP (and suppress sleep hormones).
2. ⏰ Anchor the Schedule: Keep nap times and mealtimes consistent with the new clock time. No napping too early!
3. 🌙 Protect Bedtime: Stick firmly to the scheduled new bedtime. Letting them crash early reinforces the early wake cycle.

Hang in there! We promise the adjustment will happen. 💪

The costumes are put away, but the skill gains from last week’s spooky fun are here to stay! Halloween is truly a developmental goldmine for kids. ✨

Here’s a quick look at the skills boosted during trick-or-treating:
💪 Motor & Sensory Wins
Gross Motor: Navigating steps, uneven sidewalks, and carrying a heavy candy bag was a great workout for balance and body awareness (proprioception).
Fine Motor: Sorting that mountain of treats was intense practice for the pincer grasp and bilateral coordination.
Sensory: Successfully handling the flood of spooky lights, sounds, and textures built crucial sensory flexibility.
🗣️ Social & Executive Skills
Communication: Saying “Trick or Treat!” and “Thank you!” reinforced articulation and social greetings.
Executive Function: Planning the route, waiting in line, and managing the excitement all boosted impulse control and sequencing skills.

Next time you see those leftover treats, remember the amazing therapeutic work that went into earning them!

What was your child’s biggest skill victory this Halloween season?

Let them roam! As a pediatric therapist, one of my favorite things to observe is children independently exploring a playground! It might look like just fun, but these moments are packed with developmental benefits. When kids freely navigate obstacles, climb, and slide on their own terms (within safe limits, of course!), they’re building crucial gross motor skills, problem-solving abilities, spatial awareness, and even confidence. Let them lead the way sometimes – their bodies and brains are learning so much!

Get out and explore!

Many parents see sand play as just messy fun, but from a therapeutic standpoint, it’s a goldmine for development!

Beyond the obvious gross and fine motor benefits sand play is a powerful tool for:

Cognitive Skills: Planning where to dig a hole, figuring out how to make wet sand hold its shape, and problem-solving when a tower falls all boost executive function and early math concepts (volume, measurement).

Social-Emotional Growth: Building together teaches cooperation, sharing, and communication. When a construction project goes wrong, they practice frustration tolerance and emotional regulation.

Imagination: The sandbox is the ultimate unstructured play environment—it can be a desert, a construction site, or a baking kitchen. This fuels creativity and symbolic play.

Libraries are our favorite therapeutic playground! 🤩

As PTs and OTs, we see the amazing benefits:
✅ Fine Motor Practice (page turning, gripping)
✅ Sensory Regulation (quiet space, deep pressure of carrying books)
✅ Gross Motor Challenges (navigating stairs/ramps, balancing through aisles)
✅ Social & Language Skills (story time participation)

☔️ Don’t let the rain dampen your fun! This easy, indoor activity is perfect for developing your child’s sensory skills right at home. Time to trade those soggy sneakers for some sensory play!

Kitchen Drum Kit: Use pots, pans, wooden spoons, and plastic containers to create a noisy band! This is a fantastic way to develop auditory processing and motor planning.

What’s going on here? More than meets the eye!

The minute a child sits in this swing, their vestibular system (the inner ear’s balance center) gets to work. Because the chair is constantly moving, their body has to make small, automatic adjustments to stay steady. This simple activity is a non-stop workout for:
• Balance & Coordination: Crucial for playground fun, riding a bike, and preventing trips and falls.
• Postural Control: Strengthening the core muscles needed to sit upright and focus at school.
It’s targeted, fun, and foundational for motor skill development.
