We’re so excited to announce our very first Mommy of the Month — Cherelle 💛 Cherelle is what we lovingly call an OG. She’s been part of our community for years and continues to show up, stay engaged, and pour into this work in meaningful ways.

Not only does she support the mission, she’s lived it. Cherelle has donated her own breastmilk to help sustain our Drops of Love program, providing nourishment for babies in need. That’s what community care looks like.
Join us in giving Cherelle her flowers 🌸💫 She embodies generosity, commitment, and the spirit of breastfeeding equity. We are so grateful to have her in the family.

Black mamas deserve support, preparation, and community. 🤎Breastfeeding is a team sport, and Black mamas do better when we breastfeed in community. Breastfeeding is natural, but that does not mean it is easy. When we learn from other Black women, prepare before baby arrives, and build the right support system, we change the narrative.

Get the resources and tips you need to meet your breastfeeding goals. You do not have to figure this out alone.

Try a FREE trial class with PHEI on 3/10/ 26 at 12 PM. The first 10 registrants will receive a special baby gift upon arrival. Your journey starts now.

It is not everyday that you can say you work with an all Black staff, it is certainly not everyday that you can say that you work with an all Black, female staff, it’s rare that you can say, I work with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and it’s an anomaly to say you workplace has 5 BLACK International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. We are the 4% located right here in East Orange NJ. Cheers to the many IBCLC’s out there, and a special shout out to the PHEI team, home of 5 BLACK IBCLC’s, representing approximately 4% of the Black IBCLC’s in New Jersey. Happy IBCLC Day to our fiery sqaud of IBCLC’s

If you are pregnant or recently postpartum and experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling, or extreme fatigue, this is not “just pregnancy.” Heart symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum can be warning signs of serious conditions like maternal heart failure or cardiovascular disease.

Knowing what to say in the ER could help you get evaluated faster and taken seriously. Advocate clearly. State your pregnancy status. Describe your symptoms. Request OB involvement. Your voice matters. Your heart health matters. ❤️

SAVE this post so you have it if you ever need it. SHARE this with a pregnant or postpartum mom.

HAPPENING TOMORROW

Heart conditions are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality — and too often, the warning signs are dismissed.

Chest pain.
Shortness of breath.
Swelling.
Palpitations.

These symptoms are frequently labeled as “normal,” “anxiety,” or “just postpartum recovery.” But for some mothers, they are early signs of a cardiac emergency.

In this powerful webinar panel, you’ll hear from:
• An OB/GYN sharing clinical insight on maternal cardiac complications
• A mother who required a heart transplant after giving birth
• A mother who survived a postpartum heart attack after her symptoms were dismissed

This conversation goes beyond awareness. We’ll provide practical skills for early recognition, escalation, and support because timely response can save lives.

This is especially critical for Black women, who experience disproportionately higher rates of maternal cardiac complications and are more likely to have their concerns minimized.

Red is more than a color. It’s a call to action. ❤️

We wear red because cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death for Black women before, during, and after pregnancy. Too often it goes unrecognized and untreated and it is taking the lives of our Black mamas. But this CAN be prevented.

If you are Black, your heart is at risk, not because of race, but because of racism and the inequities that impact our care.

Did you know?
🔺 Preeclampsia can increase your risk of heart disease for 10 to 15 years after giving birth.
🔺 Black mothers may be more than 3x as likely to develop dangerous heart failure.

If you have had preeclampsia or are at risk, your care team should include a cardiologist, a primary care provider, and a nutritionist. Your heart health matters before, during, and long after pregnancy.

We wear red for awareness. We wear red for prevention. We wear red for our mothers.❤️

Still think breastfeeding is just a feeding choice? At PHEI we believe breastfeeding is more than simply a food. It has health benefits for both the mom and baby, including the maternal heart. This is critical for Black women who are less likely to successfully breastfeed and more likely to have heart complications during and after pregnancy. Grow your skill set with PHEI by joining this free webinar on 2/20/26 at 12:30 to learn from our resident IBCLCs Melanie and Brittany.
