How to Choose a Toothbrush
Toothbrushes: What to Look for
Generally, adults should brush their teeth with a toothbrush with a 1/2-inch wide head, 1inch tall handle, and long enough handle to comfortably hold while brushing. Your molars can be difficult to reach if your toothbrush is too big, and your teeth may not be cleaned as effectively if your toothbrush is too small.
A toothbrush has three types of bristles: soft, medium, and hard. The best and safest choice is to use nylon bristles. It is actually more harmful to use medium or hard bristles than to use soft ones! Your gums and enamel can be damaged by these stiffer bristles, especially if you brush too hard.
There are also straight and rounded bristles. As rounded bristles don't have sharp edges that can damage your gums and increase your chances of infection and inflammation, they are safer.
Toothbrushes: Electric vs. Manual
Which is better, a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush? Each has its pros and cons. Electric toothbrushes can help you remove plaque from your teeth if you lack manual dexterity (such as people with disabilities or arthritis).
There are many toothbrushes that come with timers, so you can make sure to brush for the full two minutes. There are also electric toothbrushes with sensors that tell you if you are brushing too hard and damaging your enamel.
Having trouble deciding?
Look for toothbrushes that have the American Dental Association's (ADA) seal of approval. Your dentist can help you determine which toothbrush is best for you. Their knowledge will help you make the right choice when it comes to your oral health.
