A Positive Atmosphere Story Time Pt 1

I originally opened atmosphere, as a smokeshop, in April of 2019 in Cranston, RI. I’d been in and out the smokeshop business since 1998, when. I started working for my aunt when I was a sophomore at URI.

She owned legendary stores, Phunky Stuff (formerly in Cranston) and It’s All Good (formerly in PVD). It was there that I got my first experience in the cannabis industry, back when there was no cannabis industry. Any ma*****na talk was a definite non-no and to this day saying “bong” feels like a swear.

I spent 6 years being her GM before I opened my own clothing / smokeshop called Ohkeedoke, which I opened in Woonsocket, EP, Cranston, and Swansea.

After 9 years of doing that, I landed with AT&T. I know everyone had their typical corporate burnout stories, but I actually loved that job for most of my time there. Unfortunately, I came to a crossroads in my career there and decided I wanted to be back in business for myself.

I remember feeling in a negative place and decided I was going to be in a positive atmosphere moving forward. The name and logo idea came immediately. So I opened atmosphere as a smokeshop.

Just the year prior, in 2018, the Farm Bill passed, making h**p legal in all 50 states. So when I opened atmosphere, cbd had started to become popular. Naturally, I sold cbd in my smokeshop. Once cbd sales started to take off, I began experimenting with cbd in coffee.

I’ve always enjoyed a good cup of coffee and personally, loved cbd in my coffee. So I bought a kuerig and started infusing coffee for customers. Coffee turned into cookies & brownies. All the while, I was watching “Bong Appetit” on YouTube when I realized “I can do this” & decided to turn atmosphere smokeshop into “atmosphere cbd café,” but didn’t feel I was in right location.

At the same time, I had a meeting with a small local chain coffeehouse owner looking for a good manager, so I took the opportunity to learn what it takes to run a café while I rebranded. TBH, I only did that job for a month before Best Buy offered me a position that was considerably more pay. Except, I hated that job…good job tho

Friends, I’m closing in East Providence…

Really, I probably shouldn’t have reopened here after all the issues I (and others) have had with the City of East Providence—but I was determined to follow through on an outdoor grant I received.

That grant required I stay in certain areas, so I took a space I didn’t love. When the brutal winter hit, I had to rush out of the food truck and back into a building—and I did my best to make it work.

…but friends, I’m tired. Tired of fighting with my own city. Tired of having the mayor’s office call the police. Tired of dealing with a miserable landlord. I’m absolutely exhausted by the Bridge traffic. And that stress made it hard to give you the real Atmospheric experience I envision.

So, I’ve made the hard decision to close—and I’ve accepted a new job that lets me support my community in a different way and finally breathe.

Our last day open will be Sunday, April 13.

I know this is disappointing for those of you who waited patiently for us to reopen, and I’m so grateful for your support. But it’s time to drop dead weight from our balloon—and build something better.

So what’s next?

East Providence is done—but is not.

With everything going on in the world (and this 🤡 in the White House), staying mobile and adaptable is the move. I’ve learned a lot running the truck last summer. I want to get back to that energy.

We’re hoping to raise $$$ to help close out the café, reset, and invest in another food truck that can help “a positive tmosphere” stay on the move —popping up at markets, shows, private “License to Chill” member events, & more. We will be around at least twice a month with something NEW. We joined too to step our game up.
