American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP)

American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) linktr.ee/aaap1985 Members do not need to be physicians and the number of non-physician members actively serving on committees is growing.

Founded in 1985, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is an academic membership society organization and joint accredited continuing education provider whose main educational mission is to educate health care professionals in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. The organization is governed and operated by a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee, a Chief Executive Officer, and a variety of member committees that report to the Board of Directors. These committees provide members the opportunity to participate and contribute in a collegial environment to define and carryout the mission of the organization. AAAP provides all healthcare providers with an opportunity to work with colleagues in collaborations, learn up-close from thought leaders, and contribute their own knowledge to an ever-expanding dialogue.

Join presenter Danica Love Brown, MSW, CACIII, PhD for the next Addiction Psychiatry Advanced Psychotherapy session, “Cultural Considerations in Tribal Behavioral Health Practice,” on Wednesday, December 10 from 5:30-7:00 PM ET.

This presentation delves into cultural considerations when working with Tribal communities, emphasizing the profound impact of historical trauma and ancestor memory, and the importance of culturally grounded approaches to healing. Participants will gain an understanding of trauma’s effects on the whole person, particularly historical, intergenerational trauma and ancestral wisdom, on Tribal communities.

The presentation will highlight the inherent strengths and resilience within Tribal communities, exploring how ancestral wisdom, cultural practices, and community connection serve as protective factors. It will promote the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge and traditions into healing practices to foster overall health and wellness, while also providing practical strategies for building trust and promoting culturally sensitive interventions.

Results from the SAMHSA 2023 NSDUH show that among veterans aged 18 or older, 2.8M (or 14%) had past year substance use disorder.

What’s more, veterans aged 18-49 were more likely to have a past year substance use disorder, alcohol use disorder, or drug use disorder than veterans aged 50 or older.

Veterans with substance use disorder encounter distinct challenges influenced by their military backgrounds, experiences of service-related trauma, and the intricacies of adjusting to civilian life. Support, understanding, and access to care are critical in enabling veterans with substance use disorder and mental health challenges to pursue recovery and lead fulfilling lives.

This past September, the Council on Social Work Education released a webinar exploring the intersection of substance use and veteran status, examining the impact of post-traumatic stress, moral injury, and systemic barriers to care. Access through Pcss-Moud here: https://bit.ly/447fh96

Support, understanding, and access to care help veterans with substance use disorder pursue recovery and live meaningful lives.

A decline in opioid use disorder diagnoses is encouraging, but our work isn’t over. We must continue to prioritize education and training, as it is estimated that more than half of veterans will experience substance use disorder at some point in their lives¹.

🥁 And the debate winner is…the “Perils” team!

Audience polling moved from For 40% / Against 18% / Undecided 43% to For 23% / Against 64% / Undecided 13%.

That +46-point surge for “Against” delivered the largest shift and the win. Ninety-four percent of attendees reported being open to changing their vote—mission accomplished for a rigorous, minds-open discussion.

Thanks to the Chair Joao P. De Aquino, M.D., the speakers, and attendees for an energizing debate!
