What an inspiring experience mentoring MD26 TAs and Head TAs (4th year medical students) as they led a peer-driven clerkship, The Clinical Skills Clerkship, at The Warren Alpert Medical School, promoting wellness and demystifying the role of a 3rd-year medical student.

A huge thank you to our selected Head TAs, Claire Greydanus, Marinna Okawa, Meylakh Barshay and Nathan Wright, for their leadership, dedication, and energy in planning the CSC.

Thank you, Dr. Niko Kakos (fellow Neurologist at Brown Neurology), for delivering a heartfelt and inspiring keynote speech on the last day of the CSC.

Cheering you on, MD28, as you enter your clerkships! Remember the importance of wellness and that medicine is a journey of lifelong learning!

Do Your Seizures Have Triggers? For some people, seizures follow a pattern — and learning what triggers them can make a big difference in managing epilepsy.

✨ What are seizure triggers? Triggers are situations or factors that may increase the chance of a seizure. Not everyone has them, and they can look different for each person.

Common triggers include:
• Lack of sleep
• Stress or illness
• Missed medications
• Alcohol
• Hormonal changes
• Flashing lights

Keeping a seizure diary helps identify patterns, such as seizures occurring during sleep, stressful times, or at certain points in the month. Over time, this can help you and your care team adjust treatment and reduce risk.

✔️ Track seizures, sleep, stress, and medications
✔️ Note timing and symptoms
✔️ Bring your log to appointments
✔️ Adjust habits once triggers are identified

Understanding your triggers = better control and confidence.
We’re here to help you every step of the way.

Epilepsy affects women differently. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause can influence seizure patterns, and symptoms may be subtle, sometimes mistaken for stress or anxiety.

Understanding these differences is essential for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.

Epilepsy affects people of all genders, but for women, seizures can be influenced by unique biological and hormonal factors that require special attention. Recognizing how epilepsy manifests differently in women and how treatment may need to be customized can significantly improve symptom management

How does sleep affect seizures? 😴🧠 Sleep and epilepsy are closely connected, and getting enough rest plays a bigger role than many people realize.

🔹 Lack of sleep is a common seizure trigger
🔹 Some seizure types happen mostly during sleep or right after waking
🔹 Epilepsy itself can disrupt sleep quality
🔹 Certain seizure medications may cause drowsiness or insomnia

When sleep is off, seizures can become more frequent or harder to control. The good news? Improving sleep habits can help reduce seizure risk and support overall brain health.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, talk with your neurologist or primary care provider. Identifying sleep issues early can make a meaningful difference in seizure management and quality of life.

Your brain needs rest to function at its best. ♥️
