In the 1960s, researchers noticed something unusual about a small community called Piedade, nestled in the Atlantic Forest region of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The people there enjoyed remarkably robust health into old age. Rates of certain chronic conditions were strikingly low. Residents had been eating a local wild mushroom for generations, one they called Cogumelo de Deus, the Mushroom of God.

That mushroom was Agaricus blazei.

The community had not done anything complicated. They simply lived close to the land, and this mushroom was a regular part of their diet. A mushroom with four names has a story worth telling.

In Brazil, people have long called it Cogumelo do Sol (Mushroom of the Sun) or Cogumelo de Deus (Mushroom of God). In Japan, where researchers first studied it in the 1960s, it became Himematsutake, the Princess Matsutake. In North America and Europe, it is known as Royal Agaricus or by its scientific name, Agaricus blazei.

Each name reflects something real. The Brazilian names speak to reverence. The Japanese name honors its quality and potency. "Royal" acknowledges what generations of Brazilians already knew: this is a mushroom of uncommon value.
