Mushroom Wisdom

Mushroom Wisdom A Global Leader in Mushroom Dietary Supplements including; Maitake D-Fraction and SX-Fraction, Lion's For more than 30 years Mushroom Wisdom, Inc.

(MWI) has continuously developed and produced the finest research supported mushroom products. While mushrooms have been used traditionally for thousands of years, Mushroom Wisdom actually began in 1991, as Maitake Products, Inc., with the goal of bringing the health and immune supporting benefits of the, at the time, relatively unknown Maitake mushroom to the U.S. *

The original and only product that was offered was Grifron® Maitake, a simple, straightforward whole Maitake mushroom powder that offered a full range of Maitake’s actions. As researchers further explored this promising mushroom they found it contained a potent, unique beta glucan that was orally effective for supporting healthy immune function.* This became known as D-fraction. Maitake D-Fraction® PRO 4X, the company’s flagship product, is now available in a quick and easy “spray” form. Maitake D-Fraction “EZ” Spray is convenient for “on-the-go” administration. Further research on the Maitake mushroom led to discoveries related to its promising actions for supporting healthy blood sugar and insulin functions.* As a result of these studies the SX-fraction was born. After 10 years of being a “one mushroom” company we introduced a line of single mushrooms, all “super” enhanced by high quality mushroom fruiting body and unique mushroom extracts. This “Super” mushroom line includes Agaricus, Chaga, Coriolus, Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Meshima, Reishi, Shiitake and Tremella. MWI recently introduced Super Poria, based on their research of this mushroom and unique mushroom extract. By 2010 the company acknowledged its role as a leader in the mushroom category by changing its name to, Mushroom Wisdom Inc., to better reflect its diversity of products. By embracing the word “wisdom” as part of its new company name, MWI honors the thousands of years of traditional use of these mushrooms, while also emphasizing its industry leading commitment to furthering our knowledge and understanding with scientific research. As an industry and category leader, MWI is committed to offering the safest and most effective mushroom and mushroom extract supplements. MWI has developed proprietary extractions of several mushrooms to further enhance their beneficial actions. MWI has supported and continues to support investigations into the wondrous world of mushrooms at respected research institutions, such as Georgetown University, New York Medical College, and Shizuoka University in Japan as well as by renown researchers such as Harry Preuss, MD, Sensuke Konno, PhD, and Hirokazu Kawagishi, PhD. All MWI products are manufactured in a cGMP facility in the U.S with all mushroom materials verified for identity. Having celebrated their first 25 years in business last year, Mushroom Wisdom is looking forward to another 25 outstanding years offering you the finest mushroom supplements grounded in tradition, expanded by research.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Reishi has been called the "mushroom of spiritual potency" for thousands of years. There is a reason it endured. When the nervous system is constantly braced against the demands of modern life, something deeper gets depleted. Reishi has long been treasured for its ability to support a healthy stress response, promote restful sleep, and nourish the Shen, that quality of settled, luminous awareness at the heart of genuine wellbeing.*

Some things are worth returning to.

Mushroom Wisdom Super Reishi. Tradition. Science. Integrity.

High in the Himalayan highlands, yak herders noticed something curious. Their animals were seeking out a particular fungus growing among the grasses. And the yaks that found it? They became noticeably more energetic, playful, even amorous.*

This is how Cordyceps sinensis first came to human attention. Not in a laboratory. In a pasture, thousands of feet above sea level, where animals knew something we were still learning.

Some wisdom is ancient. Some is just waiting to be rediscovered.

Turkey tails are often one of the few colorful fungi in February and March in Pennsylvania, catching your eye in the sea of brown. This one was tucked away in a deep pile of fallen logs, so I didn’t get to see the underside. At first sight, it could look like this is the ochre bracket (𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢), but the darker zone by the attachment practically rules that out. Plus, 𝘛. 𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢 is fairly rare south of Canada as I recently learned, and the name is quite frequently misapplied.

The mushrooms popping up in your garden beds aren't a problem. They're a progress report on what's happening underground — where most of your soil health is decided.

Every fungal species showing up this spring is telling you something specific about moisture, organic matter, and biological activity below the surface. Most gardeners pull them or poison them. The ones who read them save months of guesswork.

🌱 Nine mushrooms and what they're telling you:

- Wine Cap (Garden Giant) — appears in beds heavily mulched with wood chips or straw. It means fungal networks are active and converting raw carbon into plant-available nutrients. This is the mushroom you want to see

- Fairy Ring — circles of darker green grass or small tan mushrooms expanding outward. The mycelium is breaking down buried organic matter and releasing nitrogen in a ring pattern as it grows. The grass inside gets greener because the fungi are feeding it

- Inky Caps — clusters of gray-black mushrooms that dissolve into ink within hours. They thrive on buried wood debris — old roots, construction scraps, decomposing stumps. Heavy carbon material is being processed underground

- Bird's Nest Fungi — tiny cup-shaped fungi with small round structures inside, found on mulch and wood chips. A sign that surface organic matter is being colonized by decomposers. The mulch layer is biologically active, not just sitting there

- Puffballs — round white balls in lawns and bed edges. They indicate high organic matter and balanced moisture. Puffball colonies often map the most biologically fertile zones in a yard

- Yellow Mushrooms in Pots — small bright yellow caps in container soil or heavily amended beds. Signals rich organic mix with active fungal life. Harmless — it's composting the amendments from within

- Slime Mold — bright yellow or orange patches on mulch after rain. Moisture is high and microbial life is dense at the surface. It vanishes on its own in dry weather and damages nothing. Reduce watering frequency if it bothers you

- Honey Mushrooms — clusters at the base of trees or woody perennials. This one is different from the rest — honey fungus is parasitic and attacks weakened roots. If it appears near a tree, check for dieback, soft bark, or canopy decline and consult an arborist

- Stinkhorn — unmistakable smell, rapid overnight appearance. Feeds on buried wood mulch and organic debris. Flies spread its spores, which means the decomposition cycle is attracting a full insect food web underground. Unpleasant but productive

🌱 The quick read:

- Wine caps, bird's nest, puffballs — your soil biology is thriving. Keep mulching. No action needed
- Fairy rings and inky caps — buried carbon is being processed. Let it finish. Digging disrupts the network doing the work
- Honey mushrooms near trees — the only one requiring investigation. Everything else is working for you
- Stinkhorns — tolerate them. They're composting your mulch faster than anything else in the bed

The fungi aren't invading. They were there first. You're seeing the fruit of a network that's been building your soil since before you planted 🌿

Having a ball this weekend? Here’s another ball to occupy your time: the giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea)! Not your typical mushroom, this round off-white fungus ranges in size from a softball to a beach ball. Since it doesn't have a stem, it "sits" on lawns and meadows, absorbing nutrients from the soil. A mature giant puffball contains trillions of tiny spores that emerge as a puff of "smoke" if the mushroom is tapped or kicked.

There is something quietly astonishing about a mushroom pushing up through asphalt.

No permission asked. No ideal conditions required. Just life, doing what life does, finding a way through whatever stands between it and the light.

Mycologists have documented mushrooms cracking through pavement, emerging from concrete rubble, fruiting in the charred aftermath of forest fires. The mycelial network beneath the surface simply waits, reads the environment, and responds. Not with force. With intelligence.

This is what thousands of years of traditional wisdom recognized long before modern science caught up: medicinal mushrooms are master adaptogens. They don't bulldoze. They navigate. And in doing so, they offer us something worth paying attention to.

At Mushroom Wisdom, we've spent decades studying what these remarkable fungi have to teach us about resilience, balance, and the kind of strength that doesn't look like strength at all.

Adapt. Heal. Grow. No matter the terrain.

That's not just a tagline. It's a lesson fungi have been living for 400 million years.
