April is National Foot Health Awareness Month.

Foot health is critical for balance, because your feet are your base of stability. Poor foot health, including weak muscles, pain, structural issues (like flat feet), or neuropathy, limits mobility, causes compensation in walking patterns, and drastically increases your risk of falls.

Key ways foot health affects balance:

The soles of your feet are packed with sensors that tell your brain where your body is in space, allowing for quick, subconscious posture adjustments. Reduced sensation, due to issues like peripheral neuropathy, impairs this feedback, leading to instability.

Strong, functional foot muscles and arches provide essential shock absorption and stability. Conditions like flat feet or high arches can destabilize this foundation, making it harder to maintain balance on uneven surfaces. Weak muscles in your feet and ankles reduce your ability to make fast, stabilizing movements.

Chronic pain from conditions like plantar fasciitis or arthritis causes changes in they way you walk to avoid pain, which can lead to poor posture and balance.

April is here and it's National Foot Health Awareness Month! This month we'll highlight the connection between foot health and overall wellness, and encourage good habits to prevent problems.

Foot health matters because it's key to mobility and stability - your feet carry you an average of 115,000 miles in a lifetime. Foot health is also key in preventing the pain chain reaction: Poor foot health can lead to pain and discomfort in the ankles, knees, hips, and back. It's also essential for diabetics to maintain their foot health to avoid catastrophic issues for their feet.

So let's start here: do your feet hurt? If so, get in touch. https://buff.ly/6rDmUsh

It's the first day of Spring!! If you laid off running all winter and are about to get back into your routine, don't push too hard in your first 2 weeks. It will take at least a few runs at a pace below your fall maximum to get your joints and muscles back in condition.

We see a significant increase in sprains among weekend athletes at this time of year. Ankle sprains are not to be taken lightly, because if left untreated, they’ll weaken your ankle, making it more likely that you’ll injure it again. Repeated sprains lead to , long term pain, and weakness in the ankle joint.

So ease back into your routine. And if you do injure your ankle, see us right away for an assessment and treatment plan.
