Experiencing hip pain? There are several causes of hip pain, and it is important to find out the cause, before damage occurs.
One common type of hip pain is FemoAcetabular Impingement (FAI). It usually presents with a sharp pain in the groin with certain hip movements. The condition is caused when extra bone grows along the âballâ or âsocketâ aspect of the joint giving the bones an irregular shape. Because they do not fit perfectly anymore, the bones rub against softer tissue, and can cause pain, limping, stiffness, and eventually, damage to the joint capsule, which could require surgery.
The socket portion is called the acetabulum is part of the pelvis, the ball portion is the head of the femur. Each are lined with slippery cartilage and encapsulated by a softer labrum. The irregular bone growth can rub up against the labrum, causing micro tears.
The good news is that this can be diagnosed with simple orthopedic tests in the office, and possibly x-rays. Caught in time, treatment may be as simple as targeted stretches and strengthening exercises performed at home.
If you are experiencing hip pain of any kind, it is best to get evaluated as soon as possible.
