Did you know there are 610,000 to 1.3 million hospitalizations because of the flu each year?

Anyone can get the flu — even healthy people. But some are at higher risk of serious illness, including adults 65+, pregnant women, young children, and those with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

A flu shot is your best defense against serious illness, hospitalization, or complications and it's not too late to get yours.

Vaccines are available through your primary care provider (P*P), local pharmacy, and the Wayne County Health Department or other healthcare clinics.

To schedule with your P*P, use the MyReid app to quickly find an appointment that works best for your schedule.

To stay on top of flu symptoms this year, use the new MyReid Symptom Checker to get quick guidance on symptoms and your next steps. The Symptom Checker can help you decide if you can treat your symptoms at home or if you need to schedule an appointment with your P*P or urgent care.

Schedule your flu shot or access Symptom Checker to keep yourself safe this flu season: https://www.reidhealth.org/myreid.

Rick St. John is all too familiar with suffering. A 23-year career serving in the U.S. Army left him with a body that couldn’t hold up to the physical rigors the military demanded any longer.

“It all started with my back,” he said. “These rucksacks we had to wear were 60 to 70 pounds, and you’re putting miles and miles and miles on your feet and knees. The back can only take so much of that before it starts compressing.

“I chose to retire because my body just wasn't going to take it anymore. I had multiple discs that were starting to bulge and were giving me problems.”

An initial surgery, pain injections, epidurals, and nerve ablations only provided temporary relief over the following years. Finally, it was time for surgery, but the VA didn’t have a surgeon available.

“When they offered me community care, I'm like, ‘Oh, this is great. Can I use Reid?’ And they approved it. And I said, ‘OK, I want Dr. Vien,’” Rick said.

Now, he’s back to hunting and fishing, going on mission trips, and doing all the things he couldn’t enjoy anymore before his procedure.

“You don't have to live in pain. The answers are out there. You just need to motivate yourself to go find them,” Rick said.

“And in my case, it was Dr. Vien and Reid.”

🌼 Hayley Ginder wasn’t expecting to go into labor early. Though the unexpected delivery made her nervous, a familiar face helped to ease her worries. Her nurse stayed by her side bringing calm, comfort, and care.

In recognition of her extraordinary care, Olivia Ripberger, RN, Family Birthing Center, is our DAISY Award recipient for October.

Hayley and Olivia share a special bond — Olivia helped deliver Hayley’s first daughter two years earlier, and the two originally worked together in our Critical Care Unit in 2020, when Olivia was a Student Nurse Technician and Hayley helped guide her as a new nurse.

“Olivia made my experience truly enjoyable and something I’ll treasure forever,” Hayley said. “She has a heart of gold and will always hold a special place in my heart.”

If you’re eligible for Medicare, you have until Dec. 7 to choose the plan that best fits where you are in your health journey. Medicare can be complex with many options to choose from, but we’re here to help.

We recently held a community information session called the “ABCs of Medicare & Medicare Advantage.” If you missed it, the handouts and other materials from that event are available at https://reidhealthaccess.org/.

There you’ll also find other helpful resources and FAQs to guide you as you make your Medicare choices for 2026. Head on over today!

Reid Pediatric & Internal Medicine is excited to welcome Erin Perez, MD, to the team. Dr. Perez earned her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and she completed her residency at Shand’s Children’s Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

“I always felt called to be a doctor. I chose pediatrics because my heart has always been with the children,” Dr. Perez said. “It’s my passion to build relationships with my patients and their families and teach them how to achieve healthier, happier lives.

“As both a mother and a pediatrician, I understand the joys and challenges of parenting. I strive to make parents feel heard and valued for the excellent care they already provide. My role is to support both children and their families every step of the way on their journey to health and growth.”

With more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occurring outside of hospitals each year in the U.S., access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) can make all the difference in community members receiving lifesaving care.

In one study, survival was about 7% when no resuscitation was attempted, but when an AED shock was delivered before EMS arrival, survival increased to 38%.

Despite their ability to save lives, there are millions of AED units distributed across the U.S., and yet experts estimate many millions more are needed.

We’re proud to support the latest recipients of the Reid Health AED Grant Program including:
• Soldiers in the Army of the Lord Ministries
• First Friends Meeting
• First United Methodist Church
• Cambridge City Volunteer Fire Department
• Nettle Creek Community Coalition
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County
• Birth to Five
• Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department
• Neighborhood Health Center

Each of these organizations is committed to improving health and safety across our region.

The program is taught by Reid Health EMS and administered by the Reid Health AED Committee, which provides instruction on properly using an AED in the event of an emergency. The program is funded by Reid Health Foundation.

One day recently, Tabitha Johnson made her way around our North Complex facility handing out a little surprise to co-workers.

The laminated cards featured various words of affirmation, including one that read, “There are people in this world who make things better wherever they go. Thank you for being one of them.”

“I’ve heard for many years throughout my life you never really know what someone else is going through, and if I can give one person one positive moment, then that’s what I’m going to do whenever I can,” Tabitha said.

“Everyone needs to know someone is thinking about them. I want everyone to have a smile on their face for just a minute when they’ve a bad day or when they’ve been yelled at for something that might not have been within their control.”

For this and many other reasons, Tabitha is our Ambassador for the month of November.

There’s more about Tabitha at https://www.reidhealth.org/press-releases/november-ambassador-leaves-lasting-impression-of-warmth-and-helpfulness. Join us in congratulating her in the comments below!

“Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?”

Aaron Johnson and his three siblings used to get that question often from their dad as the family drove home from a ballgame or practice.

Aaron thought maybe he wanted to be a doctor, but that answer came with a question of its own: Could he do it?

“Back then I remember thinking, ‘Man, being a surgeon's going to be hard. I'm not sure I’ve got it in me,’” Aaron said.

“Somewhere along the way I said, ‘You know, that would be very cool to be a surgeon or be a physician and be able to help people. I don't know if I can do it, but I don't want to get to the end of my life and say I'm not sure if I could have done it. I want to know if I could have.’

“So the only way you're going to know is if you try to do it. And that's when I took off and started doing everything I could to be a physician.”

That resolve pushed Aaron down a winding path that took him from his home in southwest Ohio to Virginia, back home and then to Washington, D.C., and on to Richmond where he started his practice in urology and a family of his own.

And now to the 2025 Paul S. Rhoads Humanity in Medicine Award.

Named after its first honoree in 1983 – the late Paul S. Rhoads, MD – the Humanity in Medicine Award honors the memory of Dr. Rhoads for his service to patients and medicine. He was the founding director of our Medical Education Department and helped organize the hospice program and the Wayne County adult clinic for the indigent.

Dr. Johnson is the 45th recipient of the honor. Learn more about him at https://www.reidhealth.org/press-releases/2025-rhoads-humanity-in-medicine-winner-sets-the-bar-very-high, and congratulate him in the comments below!
