The permanent makeup industry is a beautiful one — it changes lives, restores confidence, and gives artists the chance to create real impact through their work. But I have to be honest, I don’t love the every direction it has taken.

At some point, it feels like the craft got overshadowed by the business of selling the dream. Everywhere you look, artists became “trainers,” promising new students that all it takes is one course and suddenly you’ll be making six figures or more. The reality? That’s just not true.

This industry takes far more than a certificate and roughly 130 hours of training. It takes years of practice, refinement, investment in education, and most importantly- patience and the financial ability to say no to a client that does not need your work. Real success comes from honesty and dedication to your craft.

And let’s be real — the “make $250k a year after one course” marketing does more harm than good. It sets up new artists for disappointment when they realize clients don’t just appear out of thin air, and that building a reputation takes time, sweat, and resilience. It also waters down the credibility of the industry as a whole.

I’ve seen so many talented people walk away, not because they weren’t capable, but because they were sold an unrealistic picture of what success looks like. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a craft. It’s an art. And it deserves more respect than flashy dollar signs.

If you’re new and you really love this work, please don’t give up. Find a mentor who is honest with you, invest in continuing education, be willing to mess up and learn, and give yourself the grace of time. Real success doesn’t come from rushing, it comes from showing up, over and over again, until your work speaks for itself.
