As riders head into the competition season, therapeutic equine massage and BEMER blanket plays a key role in preparing horses both physically and mentally for peak performance. Regular massage helps improve circulation, increase flexibility, and reduce muscle tension, allowing your horse to move more freely and perform at their best. It can also aid in preventing injuries by identifying and addressing areas of soreness before they become larger issues. Horses that receive consistent bodywork often show improved relaxation, focus, and overall performance in the ring. As someone who also rides competitive dressage, I’ve experienced firsthand how therapeutic massage and BEMER blanket can enhance a horse’s comfort, movement, and competitive edge.

As the weather has gotten warmer, and it is easier to take longer and more consistent dog walks, it is necessary to keep these factors in mind to provide your dog with the best outdoor experience.

Start with your calm demeanor. Dogs get very excited at walk times. Use the leash as a reward. Wait for the dog to calm down, then attach the leash. The calmer the start, the easier and more focused the walk.

Have consistency in your walks. Calmly walking at your side, with regular sniff intervals.

Pay attention to their body cues. Perking ears, stiffining body, pace quickens, etc. If you catch these signs early, give your dog distance, slow down, and redirect their behavior.

Use the last few minutes of the walk as a cool down. Slow the pace, reward the dog calmly. This will tone the dog's energy down before entering the house.

Happy walking, everyone!

“On National Hug Your Dog Day, take a moment to wrap your arms around the one who loves you most unconditionally—because their joy lives in every heartbeat beside you. A simple hug reminds them they’re your whole world, just as you are theirs.” 🐾

You may not realize, but your dog is a master of hiding discomfort. Spotting the early signs of joint pain and mobility issues will help protect your dog’s comfort and quality of life. I had a client this week, who's younger dog was showing the following clues. This owner chose massage over medications. Pay attention to the following:

1. Before obvious limping appears, dogs can have micro-hesitations. Pausing before jumping into the car, or onto the bed, or using the stairs. By shifting weight to other limbs can can move from mild soreness to chronic pain.

2. Gait, posture and stride changes. Dog's that start out with a slight gimp that improves after a few moments is inflammation loosening, not healing. Overtime, this can cause compensation patterns that can trigger secondary injuries.

3. Behavior changes like getting grumpy or aggressive when the hips are touched, no longer jumping up on furniture, avoiding smooth floors. Lack of activity can lead to muscle loss, weak muscles and joint instability.

As spring arrives and horses begin returning to regular work after the winter break, equine massage is a great way to help their bodies transition back into competition season. Massage helps loosen muscles that may have become stiff during reduced winter activity, improving flexibility and range of motion. Early spring sessions can also increase circulation and support faster muscle recovery as training intensity begins to rise. By addressing minor tension before it becomes a problem, massage helps keep your horse comfortable, balanced, and performing at their best. Starting the season with proper body care sets both you and your horse up for a stronger, more successful competition year. 🐎🌱

Following a Passion

I have had numerous dogs and a few horses in my life. As long as I can remember dogs and horses have been a big part of my life. I was involved with 4-H and showed dogs and horses. I have been riding horse since I was a little girl. I started riding Western and then switched to English specifically dressage. Through riding dressage I have found the benefit of massage since they are athlete and like a human athlete their muscles get sore, they can injure themselves and they need treatment just like you and I. Massage has benefited my riding as I am able to give relive to my horse’s muscles and to keep him in top performance. The bonds we share with them are precious and last forever. I have followed my passion and became a massage therapist for our furry forever friends.

I had a golden retriever who went through hemangiosarcoma and had to have her front right leg amputated. For the last 18 months of her life, she had to walk on three legs. Dogs put 60% of their weight on their front legs and she was putting all that weight on one leg. That put a tremendous strain on her body. I was not a massage therapist at the time but we did see the benefit of massage on her body.

Through my experience in riding and having a dog with health challenges I have first hand seen the positive effects of massage for dogs and horses. I am dedicated to the health and well being of your dog or horse.
