Which sounds should my child be saying? Understanding speech milestones can help! 🗣️ 👅👂

These sounds are usually mastered by the following ages:

Ages 2-3: b, p, m, d, n, h, t, k, g, w, ng, f, y
Age 4: l, j, ch, s, v, sh, z
Age 5: r, zh, th (voiced)
Age 6: th (voiceless)

Important takeaway: Speech errors are a normal part of learning to talk. By age 5, most children are understood 90-100% of the time.

If you have concerns or if your child is becoming frustrated when trying to communicate, reach out to an SLP to discuss your child’s development. Early intervention can make a huge difference! 💫

Speech and Language Tips for Back to School! 🍎 🚌 🖍📚

Summer themed activities have been on repeat these last few months! 🌷 🌼

We’ve been working on producing ‘back’ sounds and this session focused on using strong /g/ sounds in words and sentences.

‘I got a game’
‘Give me the Lego’
‘The pink grows on top of green.’
‘It’s getting bigger’
‘Bugs like to go on flowers’

We’ve used a variety of approaches to support this sound:

🔸 Learning the rules of when and how to use sounds with minimal pairs: dough-go, date-gate
🔸 Voiced vs unvoiced sounds: /k/ vs /g/
🔸 Complex sound combinations: gl-, gr-
🔸 Working on self-monitoring and correcting with less support to carryover sounds into conversation

It’s been quiet here on socials lately but there’s something new and exciting in the works! Hillside Speech will soon be offering a new service: Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy 🗣

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) helps strengthen and retrain the muscles of the face and mouth used for speaking, chewing, swallowing and even breathing. Supporting proper tongue positioning and improving oral functioning can have long-lasting impacts on a child’s facial growth and overall development.

OMT can help with:
☑️Tongue/lip ties
☑️Teeth grinding
☑️Oral habits (thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use)
☑️Difficulty with speech/articulation of sounds
☑️Mouth breathing
☑️High/narrow palate
☑️Malocclusions
☑️Snoring

Even if a child seems to be on track for SPEECH SOUND development, they still might need support with LANGUAGE skills.
