Spring Forest Qigong healing movements embody a wisdom that will begin to teach you more deeply the more you practice them.

Right from the beginning, in Level 1, you learn that the body is full of energy that likes to flow in very specific ways – this is the way the body is designed.

When the energy moves the way, it is designed to, not only is the body not harmed, it thrives and can even have extra energy.

But when we express our body's posture in a way that does not allow inner energy to flow smoothly or obstructs the flow of outer energy – it could be as simple as sitting on your tailbone for eight hours, with your spine curved one way, your neck another, and your shoulders hunched, – we oppose what is natural.

This creates something like friction, with the result of pain, fatigue, and – over time – even sickness and shortening of life.

What is the solution?

A posture of the body that lets energy flow smoothly inside and out – like water over carefully laid stones. The same water that can grind a stone to nothing can also pass harmlessly over the same stone, differently placed. With understanding, that water can even be redirected and collected.

When you sit or stand erect you are helping to open the back channel along the spine, which is the governing channel in the body.

It’s easy to look at pain as a “punishment” to give it a moral dimension, but really, pain is just our body’s way of letting us know we are out of balance

We can also look at pain as the body’s way of communicating to us that we need to pay attention to something.

Maybe we are doing too much of something, maybe we are doing too little of another thing, or maybe we are doing the wrong thing for us at that moment.

Pain is intelligence and compassion.

Pain is a message, information shared with our consciousness for our benefit.

Qigong teaches us ways to ask and receive messages, and Qigong provides us a means to balance the imbalances that cause pain.

As healers, pain serves to teach us, directly through our own lived experiences, compassion, patience, and sympathy for the pain of others.

Pain is a guide and pain is a gift. It guides us to our own healing and prepares us to help others.

A lot of people believe or consider Qi is energy, and energy is Qi.

Actually, that is not true.

Energy is a force.

But Qi is a force with consciousness and intelligence. Qi is the intelligence of the energy

What does that mean then? Let’s make it simple. Let me give you an example. When you operate a machine, you need the energy, right? If something wrong with the machine, can the energy itself fix the machine? No, because energy needs to be conducted by a force such as a human or a machine. So to fix the machine, you will have to find a technician to come in to fix it.

But Qi is different.

Qi runs by itself; it doesn’t need to be guided by a force, it knows what to do for you. However, we learn in Spring Forest Qigong that this Qi can be activated and cultivated for healing ourselves and others.

In Qigong, simply by doing something like the movements or the meditations, you work with the Qi to activate the intelligence of the Qi to help you to heal. It is not just using the energy. We are focusing on activating the Qi to work for you, not the energy.

For example, if you have a papercut, the body’s qi goes to the papercut and does the healing for you without a thought. Or if you have a cold, if you have a virus or infection in the body, if the virus or infection is not very serious, even without taking medication, giving the body 3, 4, 5 days to rest, the body heals by itself. Because the body has intelligence. The body has its own consciousness. The consciousness is originally from the Qi and the Qi knows what to do for you.

Qi holds the life patterns, the blueprint code and holds the information of the formation of life.

Everything is energy, and energy is vibration. Your body is a symphony of vibrations.

When all its organs and energy channels vibrate in unison, they make a beautiful music called “health.”

When, little by little, each organ and energy channel loses its rhythm and gets out of tune, your body becomes a tangled clatter of vibrations. Chaos. Let it go like this long enough, and illness is the natural result. This is the Qigong view.

And as far as your health goes, the Qigong view is that energy flows all through the body in channels.

When the channels are open and energy is abundant, you experience health; when the channels get blocked, the body’s energy becomes unbalanced – too much here, too little there.

Naturally, this affects the organs and how they work. If they start not to work well – within themselves and with each other, – the body creates all kinds of dysfunction and opens up to all kinds of outside influences. This is called illness or disease.

How do you bring harmony and health back to your body?

How do you bring all its organs and energy channels into such a powerful, unified vibration of energy, into such overwhelming resonance that it effortlessly shakes off any lesser vibration or simply absorbs it harmlessly into its own greater harmony?


It begins with a moment of relaxation.

That moment of relaxation, of silence, of stillness, lets the clatter quiet, the bustle settle, opening the door for the return of your healing intelligence.

In that moment of silence, stillness, and relaxation, your organs and energy channels have an opportunity to take up harmonious vibrations again.

And in that moment of relaxation, you have an opportunity to use your consciousness to help your body to do that.

Qigong means “working with energy.” It does not mean “doing your qigong exercises and meditations.” So, yes, it is best if you make time to do Small Universe or the Butterfly Meditation and the healing movements. But that’s a limited view of Qigong. You can do Qigong anywhere, anytime, all day long.

How about this?

When you go grocery shopping, try to smile with love every time someone makes eye contact with you. Smiling opens your heart, and it helps to open the heart of the other person. The love you share this way is the most powerful healing energy there is, and smiling releases endorphins in your own body – which help you to heal. What do you think happens when you keep doing that?

When you are standing in line, sitting in traffic, or sitting at home, practice energy breathing. That means visualizing healing energy entering every pore of your skin, running between all your cells, and gathering deep behind your navel when you breathe in, then visualizing any pain or sickness leaving the body as smoke – out through the pores, going to the ends of the sky. This breathing is a foundation of Spring Forest Qigong, and you can do it any time, anywhere, with no physical effort.

Before you leave the house every morning or before you go to bed every night, take a few seconds to close your eyes and give thanks for ten things in your life. They can be as simple as, “I am thankful I have food today” or “I am thankful for a chance to have a better day today.” Gratitude helps the kidney energy, and kidney energy is the body’s vitality. The more you can support the kidney energy, the faster you can heal and the more energy you will have to do everything you like.

For many of us, it’s only natural to feel separate from the natural world, because at every turn our lives accommodate us with the means to manipulate our physical experience in it and shelter us from the simple fact... of change.

We seem to have forgotten that simple fact, that we are in nature and nature is in us. Of course, it’s easy enough to forget.

In the winter, when days are shorter, the weather is colder, and the earth turns inward to sleep, with the flick of a finger we can turn the heat all the way up, keep the lights on all day, and stay up all night. Chances are, you can watch snow fall while you eat tropical pineapple or enjoy a fresh garden salad.

In the summer, as the sun warms the world and invites and incites every living thing to move and to grow in open air, with that same flick of a finger we can draw the blinds and enjoy an air-conditioned breeze.

So now you can see why so many people find themselves with health challenges as the seasons change.

They’ve stopped living in harmony with the energies around them. Its that simple.

We learn some very simple things and ideas in Spring Forest Qigong.

Like what?

For one, the password that we say every time we start practicing healing movements, or meditation, or healing: “I am in the universe. The universe is in my body. The universe and I combine together.”

Or, the fact that everything in the universe is energy, and energy is always transforming.

Or, the concept of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) and their cycles – one creating another, one controlling another.
