Tot Toy Tuesday!

Doll houses are great for language development. Children can practice daily activities (getting ready for bed, cooking a meal, taking a bath). Adults can model verbal routines in play that they also use in real life - such as saying "time for bath! Wash your hair, wash your face, wash your belly, wash your toes" or "time for school! Let's get dressed, put on your shirt, put on your pants, put on your shoes, let's go!".

They are also a great way to introduce functional vocabulary such as: in, on, out, up, down, open, close; environmental sounds such as: beep beep, ding d**g, shhhhh (water running), flush, knock knock; and action words such as: sleep, eat, wash, jump, cook, dress, swim, walk.

I find most of my doll houses and accessories at garage sales - even online on Marketplace. Kids don't care if it's new or not - they just care about having fun! I use doll houses with a wide range of ages - from 10 months to 10 years!

It's official! I *passed* the course for Natural Language Acquisition and Gestalt Language Processing from Meaningful Speech. I learned so much about this alternate way of learning language, and the best part is that it aligns with my play-based, child-led therapy sessions I believe in.

I completed my CLC training last spring, and am ready to help anyone who wants to learn more, be prepared when baby comes, or troubleshoot any issues they may have. 🥰

Hello! I'm so glad you're here.

I strive to help moms feel confident in feeding their babies from the start 💞 I am passionate about breastfeeding and believe KNOWLEDGE/INFORMATION is one of the keys to a successful journey.

I believe PLAY is crucial for kids, it's their natural way to learn! Getting on the floor and spending time following their lead helps us connect and engage more effectively, which creates a more successful language learning environment. ❤️

ASHA recently updated their communication milestones, and added milestones for feeding and swallowing.

Updates include shorter timeframes for the developmental onset of milestones, as well as references to supporting research for each checklist.

I'm finding more and more passion with helping moms understand and establish a strong start on their breastfeeding journeys.

Empowering yourself with knowledge on the basics of breastfeeding, as well as having support those first few weeks when it is most needed is KEY.

I've completed my Certified Lactation Consultant course through Healthy Children's Project, and am just waiting on results for the exam. I have also breastfed one baby (for 19 months) and am currently breastfeeding my second (3.5 months and going strong).

Im planning on offering lactation consulting services ASAP, and am looking forward to working with mommas and babies 💕

When you go to the peds office around that first year milestone - they may ask you how many words your child is saying. But what REALLY counts as a word?

A word is a sound or series of sounds that has meaning, is consistent and said within an appropriate context. To be counted as a word, your child doesn't have to have ALL the sounds correct! For example, if your child says 'uh' for 'up' while reaching up for you - THAT'S A WORD! Their first word may not even be spoken, signs count too! If your child signs 'milk' when he/she wants a bottle or to nurse - THAT'S A WORD!

Some examples of words are:
-animal noises (moo, baa, woof)
-approximations (dah - dog; um -yum)
-environmental sounds (vroom, beep, boom)
-sign language (such as signs for more, milk, all done)

My daughter's first spoken word was 'da' - for dad (however there is debate on if it meant dog...either way mama still did not come for a while after).
