“Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds
sang there except those that sang best.”– Henry van D**e

It’s that time of year when the birds are not silent; every morning now
the air is filled with their calls. Their voices are loud after winter’s long,
muffled days.

Like the birds, we should all be “singing” in whatever way we can. We
need to fill the woods with our voices, our talents. Don’t say that you can’t
“do” anything. We all have talents. Do you work in wood, paint, draw,
write, play an instrument, make wonderful cookies, dance, coach sports,
garden, sew, knit, organize events.....

The exciting things we can do are endless and various-- and that’s what
makes life so interesting. We are each individual and unique and so are our
talents. Those various voices make life a symphony -- if only you choose
to listen.

“Too many activities, and people, and things. Too many worthy activities,
valuable things, and interesting people. For it is not merely the trivial which
clutters our lives but the important as well.” — Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Our lives are full to bursting these days. We rush from one thing to
another. We drive children from activity to activity and struggle to fit in
time with the whole family. We have calendars on our phones to alert
us to appointments that are pending. We are constantly available to
receive calls and we are in touch with people around the world at the
touch of a few buttons. We may be busier than ever but are our lives better
than ever?

There are those who would say “yes,” but many who would bemoan the loss of time to sit and think, to
reflect on what is truly important and what could help us make the most of our days.

The empty, quiet moments of our lives can be the most important, for they are the times that nurture the soul.

“Easter is a season of hope, renewal, and deep gratitude. It’s a time when hearts turn toward the promise of new beginnings, when families gather, and when the light of faith reminds us that even in the darkest moments, joy can emerge. In the midst of life’s challenges, Easter invites us to pause, reflect, and celebrate the resurrection that offers strength and reassurance for the days ahead.”

Each Easter reminds us of the eternal abundance of life in all its forms, the beauty of God’s promise and his many gifts. Hope is the biggest gift that God gave to each of us on that first Easter Sunday when the disciples found Christ’s tomb empty. Joy and hope filled their hearts.

The Easter message is especially poignant this year as we continue to struggle with uncertainties in our country and around the world, as we search for strength and understanding. Take some time to reflect on the promise of new beginnings that mark the season and enjoy a blessed Easter.

“Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is like a tree going into the sky, and sadness is like the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. The bigger the tree, the bigger will be its roots. In fact, it is always in proportion. That's its balance.” --Osho

Sometimes people will say that in their life they just want to be “happy.” While we all want happiness to fill our days, it is sadness which gives us strength. It is sadness which gives our lives a firm foundation; it gives us depth. We may not think we can endure difficult or sad times, but we are often amazed at what we can survive and how we later thrive despite all previous odds.

Happiness and sadness--we need the balance of the two to make our lives complete.
