Vein disease is more common than most people realize—and it’s not just a cosmetic issue. 🦵💙

Left untreated, vein problems can progress and impact your comfort, mobility, and overall quality of life.

Vein disease occurs when valves in the veins don’t work properly, allowing blood to pool instead of flowing back to the heart. This can lead to symptoms like leg heaviness, swelling, aching, cramping, skin changes, and visible varicose veins.

The good news? Early diagnosis and personalized treatment can make a big difference. With today’s advanced, minimally invasive options, many patients find real relief and improved circulation.

At Cross County Cardiology, we focus on identifying the root cause of vein disease and creating individualized treatment plans designed around your symptoms, lifestyle, and long-term vascular health.

Heart health research is always evolving, and a new long-term study offers important insight into a lesser-known cholesterol marker that may affect cardiovascular risk in some women.

A 30-year study of nearly 28,000 women found that very high levels of lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), are linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular-related death.

Here’s what to know:
• Lp(a) is mostly genetic and not easily changed by diet or exercise
• Most women have normal levels and are not at increased risk
• Risk rises above 30 mg/dL, but is highest in women with levels over 120 mg/dL
• This small group had a 50–100% higher cardiovascular risk over time

Experts, including Ask T. Nordestgaard and Steven E. Nissen, say these findings reinforce the importance of identifying very high-risk patients early.

Lp(a) testing isn’t needed for everyone, but it may be helpful if you have a strong family history of heart disease.

If you have questions about your heart health, we’re here to help.

Did you know hyperlipidemia—often called high cholesterol—can affect your heart health long before you feel any symptoms? ❤️

Hyperlipidemia occurs when there are elevated levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood. Over time, this can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions—often without warning signs.

The good news is that hyperlipidemia is highly manageable. Through a combination of heart-healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, lifestyle adjustments, and when appropriate, medication, many patients can significantly reduce their risk and protect their long-term heart health.

Regular blood work and routine checkups are key. Knowing your numbers gives you the power to take action early—before complications develop.

If you’re unsure about your cholesterol levels or haven’t had them checked recently, we’re here to help guide you with personalized, compassionate care. 💙

🩺 Let’s Talk About Blood Pressure Guidelines.

Dr. Rick Pumill from Cross County Cardiology shares a clinical perspective that challenges the standard:
“For some elderly patients with vascular disease—especially cerebrovascular issues—pushing blood pressure too low, too fast, can do more harm than good.”

While guidelines aim to lower risk, aggressive blood pressure targets may increase symptoms like dizziness or even the risk of falls in certain patients. It’s a reminder that medicine isn’t one-size-fits-all.

✅ Patients with chronic kidney disease or aortic aneurysms may benefit from strict control
⚠️ But in older adults, individualized care often leads to better outcomes

At Cross County Cardiology, we tailor every plan to the patient—not just the textbook. 💙

❄️ Winter storms can do more than slow your commute—they can quietly strain your heart if you’re not careful. Snow shoveling may pose serious cardiovascular risks, especially during cold weather.

Snow shoveling might seem routine, but the American Heart Association warns it can significantly increase heart rate and blood pressure—sometimes as much as an intense cardiac stress test. Studies show the risk of heart attack rises after heavy snowfall, particularly in men and individuals with underlying heart conditions or risk factors.

Key heart safety reminders:

✅ Heavy snow shoveling can trigger heart attacks or sudden cardiac arrest
✅ Cold temperatures raise blood pressure and constrict coronary arteries
✅ People with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or prior stroke should avoid shoveling
✅ Pushing snow is safer than lifting and throwing it
✅ Chest pain, dizziness, or palpitations are warning signs—stop immediately and call 911

Staying informed and knowing your limits can make a life-saving difference during winter weather.

What’s the difference between a cardiologist and an interventional cardiologist?

Dr. Kevin Soriano from Cross County Cardiology breaks it down:
Both specialize in diagnosing and managing heart conditions like valve disease, hypertension, heart failure, and high cholesterol — but an interventional cardiologist goes one step further.

After completing general cardiology training, interventional cardiologists receive additional expertise in performing life-saving procedures like coronary angioplasty and stenting to open blocked arteries and restore blood flow.

It’s heart care with a hands-on approach — and it can make all the difference when time and precision matter most. 💙

01/19/2026

Did you know your heart rhythm isn’t always easy to catch during a short office visit? ❤️ That’s where Holter and Event Monitors play an important role in heart care.

These monitors track your heart’s activity over time—while you go about your normal day. A Holter monitor records your heart rhythm continuously for 24–48 hours, while an Event monitor is worn longer and captures irregular rhythms when symptoms occur.

They help us detect issues like:
• Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)
• Unexplained palpitations
• Dizziness or fainting
• Symptoms that come and go

Many heart rhythm problems are intermittent, meaning they won’t always show up during a quick EKG. These monitors give us a clearer picture—so we can diagnose accurately and guide the right next steps.

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms but haven’t gotten clear answers yet, this type of monitoring may help connect the dots. We’re here to guide you with clarity, compassion, and personalized care. 💙

📞 Call 1 (551) 357-0021 to learn more or see if heart monitoring is right for you.

Did you know heart valve disease can develop quietly—often without noticeable symptoms at first? ❤️ That’s why awareness and early detection matter.

Valvular disease occurs when one or more of the heart’s valves don’t open or close properly, making it harder for blood to flow efficiently through the heart. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling in the legs, or heart failure if left untreated.

The good news? Many valve conditions can be monitored, managed, or treated effectively—especially when caught early. With today’s advanced imaging and treatment options, care can often be personalized to your specific valve condition and lifestyle.

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms, have a heart murmur, or have a history of heart disease, a valve evaluation may be an important next step. You don’t have to wait until symptoms become severe.

We’re here to guide you with clarity, compassion, and personalized care—every step of the way. 💙
