Love was truly in the air at our Encompass Health hospital in Harmarville, Pennsylvania! Jennifer Jirsa, a patient recovering post-surgery, thought she was simply enjoying a crisp autumn afternoon in the hospital courtyard with her boyfriend, Michael Ladik.

In a heartfelt moment, he dropped to one knee and asked Jennifer to marry him. The surprise proposal brought smiles and happy tears to everyone nearby, and our staff couldn’t be more thrilled for the happy couple. Congratulations, Jennifer and Michael!

Your love story has touched all of us, and we’re honored Encompass Health could be part of this beautiful chapter in your journey.

Meet Gary and Lilly Lutker, an incredible couple who have shared 63 wonderful years of marriage — and recently, a unique journey of recovery together at one of our hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri. Gary had been dealing with hip pain and knew he needed a replacement. When the family learned Lilly also needed a knee replacement, they saw an opportunity to recover side by side, knowing they wouldn’t want to be apart.

Their unwavering support for one another inspired everyone around them and reminded us what true partnership looks like — in health, in healing and in life. Together, they worked with our therapy team to regain mobility, function and independence.

Thank you, Gary and Lilly, for trusting Encompass Health with your care. Your story is a beautiful reminder of the power of love and determination.

After sustaining a fall while in China, Mark experienced severe neck pain and weakness that made it impossible for him to stand, walk or move independently. He was diagnosed with a cervical fracture and underwent spinal cord surgery.

When Mark first arrived at our Encompass Health hospital in Cypress, Texas, he was unable to stand or walk. Through hard work, determination and collaboration with his therapy team — along with support from innovative technology like the Aretech ZeroG 3D system — Mark made incredible progress. He became independent with transfers and was able to walk and climb stairs on his own.

We are so proud of Mark’s dedication and perseverance, and we thank him for trusting Encompass Health with his recovery.

Catherine Maves came to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Kentucky after receiving treatment for Bell’s palsy and Guillain-Barré syndrome at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Prior to this hospital stay, she was active and independent.

When she arrived at our hospital, she required two people to help her make transfers. When she started her therapy, she needed two people to help her stand with support of the parallel bars. Our therapy team utilized the Barihab mat, Molift and electrical stimulation to improve her leg strength and functional mobility. She worked very hard during her stay, and it shows. She is now walking without an assistive device and climbing stairs independently.

We had two reasons to celebrate at our Encompass Health hospital in Woburn, Massachusetts! Not only was our patient Violet celebrating her 102nd birthday, but she was also being discharged after making remarkable progress during her stay.

Our team celebrated Violet’s achievements and gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” as she prepared to head home.

We loved celebrating with you, Violet, and we’re so glad you chose Encompass Health for your recovery.

While covering a local football game, youth sports broadcaster and producer Caleb Brown fell 20 feet, sustaining multiple injuries that led to an extended hospital stay. He came to our hospital in Melbourne, Florida for inpatient rehabilitation. With the unwavering support of his care team, Caleb worked tirelessly to regain his independence and return home.

“It’s only a matter of time until everyone sees me back doing what I love — broadcasting and producing youth sports,” Caleb said.

We had a truly special moment at our Encompass Health hospital in Newnan, Georgia recently. Love filled our courtyard as the granddaughter of one of our patients said “I do” at our rehabilitation hospital, so her grandfather could be part of her big day.

Surrounded by family, it was a beautiful reminder that healing takes many forms and love knows no limits. Congratulations to the newlyweds and thank you for letting us share in such a meaningful celebration.

We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our partnership with Vanderbilt Health, one of the largest and most prominent academic health systems, to build a 40-bed rehabilitation hospital in Lebanon, Tennessee.

The hospital will serve patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions.

Expected to open in 2028, this will be our second joint venture with Vanderbilt Health, and we couldn’t be more excited to expand access to exceptional rehabilitation in this community.

Jason “Jay” MacNeil, a 45-year-old veteran from Butler, Kentucky, went into cardiac arrest while at St. Elizabeth for a scheduled echocardiogram. He was placed on a ventilator and ECMO machine, with an uncertain prognosis due to brain damage from lack of oxygen. Miraculously, Jay recovered enough to breathe on his own and regain heart function.

He arrived at Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Kentucky with confusion, memory loss and limited mobility. Over two weeks, Jay worked tirelessly with his therapy team, progressing from using a Mo-Lift to walking laps without assistance. His determination and recovery are truly inspiring, and we’re honored to have been part of his journey.
