This stark number isn't simply a function of having a disability. It reflects the exhausting, often invisible, toll of navigating a world that still struggles with accessibility, acceptance, and inclusion. The constant fight against stigma, structural barriers, and daily (big & small) challenges is a significant energy drain that demands mental resilience.

Prioritizing your well-being is an act of self-care and profound strength.

As therapists, we see it every year: that moment when the sun dips at 4:30 PM, and suddenly, so does your energy, mood, and joy. The "winter blues" are real, common, and very manageable without a trip to sunnier destinations.

We asked our team to share simple, science-backed strategies to boost your mood and energy through the gray, and stop winter blues from developing into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

The goal isn't to be cheerful every day, but to have easy tools to interrupt the low-energy cycle.

As therapists, we see so many exhausted couples trying to carry their partner's emotions, happiness, and entire well-being on their own shoulders. That's an impossible, unsustainable job!

Here’s the critical difference:
✅ Responsible TO your partner means showing up with empathy, communicating honestly, and supporting them through their struggles. This is the act of being a loving partner.
❌ Responsible FOR your partner means feeling like you have to control their mood, fix their pain, or change their behavior to feel okay yourself. This breeds resentment and actually prevents them from building emotional resilience.

We can support you in building healthy, loving boundaries that will set you for success → slatetherapy.com/couples-therapy

Couples therapy can break unhelpful patterns and enable partners to work together to create new ways of communicating and relating that enables both partners to feel more heard, supported, and connected. It’s completely normal for disagreements with close family members to feel intense, but they don't have to escalate into a war zone. The key is shifting your goal from trying to win the argument to trying to connect with them.

⏸️ Hit pause: Call a 10-minute time-out when emotions run high. This models self-control.
❤️‍🩹 Focus on feeling by validating their emotion first: "I see you're angry. Tell me more about that."
👐 Remove blame from the equation by expressing yourself with "I" statements such as "I feel stressed when..."

This shift prioritizes your relationship over the disagreement itself.

I believe that individuals seeking support and healing from mental health disorders benefit from a place where they can be fully heard and provided with the space and safety to tell their stories. I also enjoy working collaboratively with individuals to determine how they will sustain positive chang...

We know society holds a lot of outdated beliefs about what "toughness" looks like, but the truth is, emotional courage is the truest source of power. Every year, Men's Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a vital reminder that prioritizing your well-being is the ultimate definition of strength for every human being.

To celebrate and spread awareness, we asked our male therapists what they wish every fellow man knew, and we put their top insights into this post.

Sometimes the best way to keep our minds clear is by checking in with ourselves, just like we check things off our to-do list. ✔️

At the top of that list is choosing to do at least one thing for yourself. It could be a walk, preparing a cozy meal, or watching a favorite show. Choose something just for you and treat it as important as any task.

And remember: this exercise is not about perfection or ticking every box. Focus on showing yourself some compassion and notice how these moments add up over time.

Such a brave question to ask, and that is the (very important) first step! You don't have to hit "rock bottom" to know it’s time for a change. It’s often a quiet voice inside that starts to ask, "Is this working for me anymore?" That voice is worth listening to.
While there’s not one definitive, correct answer, it might be time to seek help when:
⚠️ You’re thinking about it all the time
⚠️ This habit is affecting your relationships
⚠️ You’re hiding it from even the people closest to you
⚠️ You’ve actively tried to cut back and can’t
⚠️ It's keeping you from doing the things you love, pursuing your goals, or being the person you want to be

If any of this resonates, it’s a sign that support could bring new possibilities and a path to freedom.

My approach to therapy is connective and relational, rooted in empowerment and collaboration with the client.
