What can I do about my trauma?
We get this question a lot. You’ve been through something, maybe years ago, maybe recently, and your body hasn’t let it go.
If trauma is still affecting your daily life, here are 5 things you can actually do to start healing:
1.You’re not “too sensitive.” You’re reacting like a human.
Trauma isn’t just what happened, it’s what stuck with you after.
Flashbacks, nightmares, mood swings, numbness, panic, distrust, exhaustion… These are common reactions, not personality flaws.
(And no, it doesn’t have to be a single “big event.” Ongoing trauma counts too.)
2. Move your body, and fix your sleep
You don’t have to run marathons. But trauma gets stored in your nervous system—and movement helps release it. Sleep helps you heal.
▶ Walk, stretch, shake, lift something. It’s not about burning calories.
▶ Give your body time to rest and relax.
3. Track your triggers (not your trauma).
You don’t need to journal your trauma in detail.
But try tracking:
▶ When did your anxiety spike?
▶ Where were you? Who were you with?
This helps you see patterns, and gives your provider a clearer picture.
4. Stop white-knuckling it. Medication is an option.
You don’t need to deal with this in silence or alone.
Trauma-related symptoms like panic, irritability, hypervigilance, or shutdown can be eased with the right medication.
▶ Meds won’t erase the trauma, but they can make life livable while you heal.
5. Don’t wait for it to “get bad enough.”
If trauma is disrupting your sleep, relationships, or focus, you can start now.
▶ You don’t need to talk through it all at once. or even at the start.
▶ You just need someone to help you carry it differently.
