This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Sister Caroline Unhjem, a remarkable woman whose vision helped shape the beginning of Ebenezer.
In the early 1900s, many older adults had little support, especially those living in poverty. Sister Unhjem saw this need and worked tirelessly to help establish Ebenezer’s first free convalescent home for the poor and aged in 1916. Though she was not allowed to serve on the board because of her gender, she became the home’s first Matron, ensuring residents received care that honored their dignity, comfort, and well-being.
More than a century later, her legacy continues to guide Ebenezer communities across the Upper Midwest.
We are grateful for Sister Caroline Unhjem’s compassion, leadership, and lasting impact.
