What Is Heart Failure?
Heart failure means the heart is not pumping blood as well as it should. It does not mean the heart has stopped. It means the heart is weaker or stiffer than normal.

When this happens:
Fluid can build up in the lungs → causing shortness of breath
Swelling can develop in the legs, feet, or abdomen
The person may feel very tired or weak
Daily activities may become difficult
Heart failure is usually a long-term condition that may gradually worsen over time.

💙 When to Consider Hospice
Hospice focuses on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure.
It may be time to talk about hospice if:
There have been repeated hospitalizations
Symptoms continue despite treatment
Breathing is difficult even with minimal activity
Swelling does not improve with medications
The person is becoming weaker and less active
The patient prefers comfort over aggressive treatments
A doctor believes life expectancy may be about 6 months or less

PATIENT'S CHOICE WHEN CHOOSING HOSPICE.
Yes, a patient has the right to choose their hospice agency. In the U.S., Medicare and most insurance plans allow patients (or their families, if the patient can’t decide) to select the hospice provider they want. A case worker, doctor, or hospital may recommend or suggest a hospice agency, but the patient is not obligated to use that agency.

Here’s how it typically works:
The doctor or hospital can provide a list of hospice agencies in your area.
You (or your family) can compare services, staff, and philosophies before choosing.
Once you pick an agency, the hospital or doctor should honor your choice.
If you disagree with a suggestion, you can request another agency.
The key point: remember the choice is always the patient’s—they cannot be forced to use a specific hospice provider.

No — a hospital/doctor or facility cannot force you to use a specific hospice agency. You have the right to choose the agency that will provide your hospice care.

Here’s what usually happens:
Hospitals may recommend a hospice agency they frequently work with.
They might provide a list of options in your area.
You can accept their recommendation or choose a different agency.
Even if the hospital prefers a certain agency, your choice takes priority.
The only time it might feel pressured is if the hospital says, “We have this agency set up already,” but you are legally allowed to say no and pick another agency.

“Starting hospice early isn’t giving up—it’s choosing comfort, dignity, and support for every remaining moment.”

Here is why you should not wait to elect hospice care:

1. Better Quality of Life (Comfort Care)
Proactive Symptom Control: Early hospice involvement allows teams to manage pain, nausea, and shortness of breath before they become severe crises.
Focus on Living: Hospice is not about "giving up"; it is about maximizing the quality of the time remaining, allowing for more meaningful moments with loved ones.
Reduced Hospitalizations: By managing symptoms at home, hospice reduces emergency room visits and unnecessary hospital stays.
2. Support for the Whole Family
Caregiver Education and Relief: Hospice provides in-home nursing, aides, and volunteers, which helps reduce caregiver burnout.
Emotional and Spiritual Support: The interdisciplinary team includes social workers and chaplains to help both the patient and family process the emotional journey.
Bereavement Services: Families receive counseling and grief support, which can begin earlier, helping them prepare for the loss.

Our Story

It all started in 2000 with Taylor Home Health. That’s the branch of this company which handles home health care.

We then began to see a need for hospice. We started this new endeavor to bring our community the comfort and dignity they deserve, in 2014.

Since then, we have grown and seen a stronger need for pediatric hospice/palliative care. So, we serve both children and adults in the entire Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi area. We’re still growing.

Our family welcomes you. If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to reach out.
