Canada has officially lost its measles elimination status, and the United States could be next if cases continue to climb. Countries are at risk of losing their elimination status if an outbreak strain of the same virus persists for at least 12 months.

The most effective way to stop the spread of measles and achieve community immunity is through high vaccination rates – two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective in preventing measles.
