Starting Diabetes Prevention at a Young Age: Educating and empowering children to lead healthy lifestyles is essential to prevent serious health conditions later in life, especially diabetes.

With type 2 diabetes on the rise among children, who face increased risks of complications like kidney, heart, and eye disease at an earlier age, South Texas Health System partnered with Prominence Health Plan to host a diabetes prevention conference designed specifically for kids.

During the fifth annual Prevent, Treat & Beat Diabetes Symposium, held at the South Texas College Health Science Professions Campus, more than 100 elementary students from PSJA ISD's Aida C. Escobar Elementary participated in a healthcare professional-led seminar highlighting the dangers of diabetes. Students also participated in interactive nutrition and exercise sessions that demonstrated practical ways to build and maintain healthy habits, along with a self-care strategies class focused on supporting their mental health, led by STHS Behavioral.

A special thank you to all the presenters for their dedication to helping prevent, treat and beat diabetes in our local children.

Empowered Towards Excellence: Nurses across all 12 South Texas Health System facilities bring compassion, skill and dedication to every patient. To support their growth, STHS offers special training opportunities like the Clinical Ladder Program, which strengthens clinical expertise and promotes career advancement.

This year, Lizette Flores, RN, became the first Level II Clinical Ladder graduate at STHS Children’s—a milestone that reflects both her dedication and the program’s impact. She began her nursing career at STHS McAllen in 2005, caring for pediatric patients before transitioning to STHS Children’s when it opened in 2006. Although she briefly stepped away, her passion for her team and her patients brought her back, and she has now devoted 16 years to serving in the pediatric intensive care unit.

As part of her Clinical Ladder journey, she attended the South Texas Advanced Symposium on Trauma, Critical Care & Emergency General Surgery and completed a Stop the Bleed® course, later training PICU staff with the skills she gained.

Lizette says collaboration and communication across departments are essential to delivering the best care for young patients. “The Clinical Ladder Program allows us to grow as bedside nurses and be recognized for our dedication to quality care,” she shares.

Congratulations to Lizette on this outstanding achievement and her lasting impact on the children and families she serves.

Sleep is essential for child development; it serves as a critical period for physical growth, brain maturation and emotional regulation. A good night’s rest enables memory consolidation, boosts the immune system and directly influences learning, behavior and attention spans.
Children's sleep needs vary depending on their age, with recommendations ranging from 12 to 16 hours for toddlers to 8 to 10 hours for teenagers.
Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. children don’t consistently get the recommended amount of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation, while only 14% of elementary-aged kids meeting national guidelines. Over time, it can influence mental health and behavior, academic performance and physical health, including a higher risk of obesity, weakened immune system and daytime fatigue.
In the latest installment of its Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar series, South Texas Health System Children’s will shine a spotlight on the importance of sleep for children’s health.
During the webinar, a healthcare professional will guide families through the essentials of healthy sleep, including how to recognize signs of poor sleep quality, how to build routines that work even in busy households and when to seek guidance from a healthcare provider.

Helping Your Child Get a Better Night’s Rest: Sleep is essential for child development; it serves as a critical period for physical growth, brain maturation and emotional regulation.

Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. children don’t consistently get the recommended amount of sleep, per the National Sleep Foundation, while only 14% of elementary-aged kids meet national guidelines. Over time, it can influence mental health and behavior, academic performance and physical health, including a higher risk of obesity, weakened immune system and daytime fatigue.

So, to help families better understand the importance of sleep for children’s health, South Texas Health System Children’s is dedicating its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to the subject. Streaming live via the STHS and STHS Children's pages this Wednesday, March 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, the online seminar will guide families through the essentials of healthy sleep, including how to recognize signs of poor sleep quality, how to build routines that work even in busy households and when to seek guidance from a healthcare provider.
