A Merry IDEA Come to Life: The Christmas season is all about giving back and helping others enjoy the holidays, including children missing out on holiday parties at school due to hospitalization.

That's precisely what National Honor Society members from IDEA Los Encinos did this holiday season for patients of South Texas Health System Children’s.

The students distributed nearly 200 toys they collected during a recent toy drive to patients in the hospital's care.

Aside from toys and gifts, the students went room to room providing a little TLC to children and their families.

Thank you to these future compassionate leaders for helping make the holidays merry and bright for all at STHS Children's.

Ensuring a Sparkling & Safe New Year: Across the U.S., New Year's celebrations are about to get underway, with people ringing in 2026 with fireworks.

If you’ll be one of the millions lighting up the night sky, it's important to keep safety in mind as fireworks can burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Every year, an estimated 600 injuries associated with fireworks are treated in emergency rooms across the country, per the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission.

So, to keep you and your family safe this holiday, South Texas Health System Children's recommends following these safety tips:

🎆 Always follow the instructions on the packaging
🎇Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials
🎆 Use extreme caution when lighting fireworks in the wind
🎇Never give fireworks to small children
🎆 Practice close adult supervision is a must for children
🎇Never light or hold more than one firework at a time
🎆 Avoid wearing loose fitting apparel
🎇 Wear closed-toe shoes

New Year celebrations are meant for families to gather and enjoy the holiday, so adhering to these safety tips will help ensure your family can enjoy ringing in the new year safely.

Providing Big Care to the Littlest of Patients: Every day in the emergency room is different, and ER nurses must be able to adapt and respond to new situations at a moment’s notice.

Stephanie Flores is a dedicated registered nurse in the Emergency Department at South Texas Health System Children’s, where she's been making a difference for nearly 11 months. She began her healthcare career in 2020 as a licensed vocational nurse in an outpatient behavioral health facility, building a strong foundation of compassion, assessment skills and patient-centered care.

From the very beginning, Stephanie knew her passion was caring for children and challenging herself to provide the very best care for the littlest patients when they need it most. Today, she brings that passion to the STHS Children's ER, where every moment matters and teamwork is essential.

Stephanie thrives in the fast-paced emergency environment, using sharp clinical judgment and calm focus to support patients and families during critical moments.

“I really enjoy the fast-paced environment of the ER,” Stephanie says. “It pushes me to use my critical thinking skills every day to help stabilize patients, assist in diagnosing their condition and support the care team in treating them as quickly and safely as possible.”

Thank you, Stephanie, for your dedication, compassion and commitment to providing exceptional emergency care to our young patients and their families.

Troopers, Toys & Teddy Bears, Oh My! South Texas Health System proudly joined troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety - South Texas Region, officers from the Donna Police Department and community volunteers last weekend at GMW JCB in City of Donna, TX Government to distribute hundreds of toys to local families following their annual Troopers, Toys & Teddy Bears Toy Drive.

Families were welcomed by Elmo, Bluey, the Grinch and, of course, Trooper Santa, who greeted children with toys and candy canes, creating unforgettable holiday moments for all. After weeks of collecting donations at all 12 STHS facilities, it was truly rewarding to see those gifts placed directly into the hands of children in our community.

Toy drives like this play an important role in bringing hope, joy and comfort to families during the holiday season, and they remind us of the power of coming together to support one another.

A heartfelt thank you to every trooper, officer, volunteer, donor and community partner who helped make this year’s toy drive extra special. Your generosity made a lasting difference.

Calming Patients, Capturing Clues: Eden Herrera is a dedicated radiologic technologist at South Texas Health System Edinburg and STHS Children’s. She began her career with STHS at the height of the pandemic in 2020 and has found great joy in caring for both adult and pediatric patients across our facilities.

What Eden loves most about her role is being there for patients during moments when they may feel anxious or vulnerable, offering reassurance, compassion and a calming presence while delivering high-quality care.

“Whether it’s helping a child feel less scared or reassuring an adult who’s worried about their health, I take pride in providing not just quality imaging, but compassion and comfort,” Eden shares. “Working in a hospital allows me to be part of a team that truly makes a difference every day, and I’m grateful to do work that helps support patient care across all ages.”

From performing imaging exams like X-rays and other diagnostic studies that help physicians detect, diagnose and treat medical conditions to being one of the first caregivers that patients interact with, Eden truly believes that empathy and professionalism are essential to a positive patient experience.

Thank you, Eden, for your commitment to our patients and for making a difference every day—one image, one smile and one patient at a time.

A Cowboy Christmas: A hospital stay, especially during the holiday season, can leave a person feeling blue. But the pediatric patients and their family members at South Texas Health System Children’s were recently left 'seeing' blue.

Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin made a surprise appearance at the facility on Monday, spending time with patients, families and staff, as well as children from across the Rio Grande Valley who got wind of his visit.

After being greeted with much fanfare at the main entrance by members of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo PSJA Early College High School Dreamettes and Capable Kids Sparks cheerleading team, "The Playmaker" quickly changed into a blue Santa suit to surprise a group of patients and their family members gathered in the third floor pediatric playroom. He autographed coloring pages of his likeness that the patients had proudly completed and took photographs with them and their family members. He then went door-to-door to hand out Christmas presents and warm hugs to patients required to stay in their hospital rooms due to doctor’s orders, bringing big smiles to them and their awe-struck family members.

“I wanted them to know how important they are, not just to me but the entire community. But after this visit, I’m also left feeling the true essence of the holiday season,” says Irvin. “There are so many emotions you experience when you see a kid in the hospital. But when you walk into their rooms and see them smile and witness that moment of happiness, it really makes you check yourself. Many of us aren’t going through what they’re experiencing right now and yet we’re complaining about everything. These kids are just trying to get better. So, it makes you realize you must do better.”

A heartfelt thank you to Michael Irvin for taking the time to brighten our patients’ day and help make the season a little more magical.
