People are asking us about "the melatonin heart failure study." Let's talk about what the study says.
The author of the study notes that the study, a non-peer reviewed poster presentation, demonstrated an association between melatonin use and heart failure. Association is not causation.
He goes on to note that regular melatonin use signals ongoing sleep concerns. Persistent insomnia is both associated with worse health and is a signal of other potential health problems.
At this point, the best interpretation of this study that I have is:
1. persistent sleep difficulties, as above, may be caused by underlying health conditions
2. insomnia can cause other health problems
3. melatonin has NOT been identified as directly causing heart failure
4. Psychiatric illnesses, like insomnia, should be evaluated fully to discern whether there is an underlying cause...we provide evaluations and treatments, rather than blindly applying bandaids

The supplements are linked to heart failure among people with insomnia, study suggests.
