in the midst of ambiguity regarding safer levels of alcohol consumption, I'm returning to the science I'm most familiar with.
CDC guidelines suggest moderate alcohol use is two drinks or less in a day for men, and one drink or less a day for women, compared with drinking more. These numbers are lower after 50, and even moderate drinking may have health risks.
the 2025 US Surgeon's General Advisory notes that among 100 women having less than one drink/week, 17 will develop an alcohol-related cancer. This number rises to 19/100 for those having one drink a day, and 22/100 for two drinks/day.
Many of my patients are surprised to hear that what the believed was/is safe levels of alcohol consumption...really isn't. You do not have to fit the stereotypical "alcoholic" framework for alcohol to devastate your health.

1. methylphenidate use in childhood did NOT increase psychosis risk in later life
2. treatment of ADHD with methylphenidate BEFORE the age of 13 was associated with a REDUCTION in the development of psychosis.

This cohort study of a Finnish national multiyear birth cohort uses instrumental variable analysis to investigate whether methylphenidate alters the long-term risk of psychotic disorder in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
