Addiction is not an acute condition, but a chronic one, prone to recurrence even after sustained remission. The proposition that long-term relapse is a gradual process of disengagement from ongoing structures and supports and has a course of predictable signs has only been increasingly confirmed by research over the past 20 years. The best treatment programs will teach people how to manage the condition for a lifetime. Unfortunately, in general, programs that talk about “success rates” rarely elaborate on what that means. One year of abstinence? Five years? Reduction in use? Improved quality of life? Fewer overdoses than before? The desperation that people feel when seeking treatment doesn’t lend itself to asking important questions and the promise of a “success rate” is incredibly attractive to a vulnerable person or family looking for hope. Choose a provider who is willing to follow the research and explain what real solutions look like for durable long-term success and well being.

Mass General Brigham researchers study risk factors of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and precursors to long-term relapse among individuals after one year of complete remission.

Many may not be aware, but Arcadia Trails has been partnered with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation for the past 5 years, relying on Hazelden to grow and develop its addiction treatment firepower. Hazelden was the pioneer of modern addiction treatment. Once known as the “Minnesota Model,” Hazelden was the first to synthesize medicine, psychology, spirituality, and the wisdom of AA into a comprehensive architecture of care. Nearly all residential treatment programs that exist today use some part of that model. Today, Hazelden continues to lead the profession not just in treatment but in research, publishing, and developing the next generation of the most skilled practitioners through its grad school. Arcadia Trails, through its partnership, has been able to bring the best quality advanced care to Oklahomans. Arcadia Trails congratulates Kathryn Burgum for being selected to spearhead the fight to overcome addiction at the highest levels of government. Oklahomans will only benefit from having a skilled champion like Kathryn serve in this role.

Congratulations to Hazelden Betty Ford Trustee Kathryn Burgum for being named co-chair of the new “Great American Recovery Initiative.” The new effort aims to align federal resources, set national goals and use data to guide the government’s response to addiction. In her former role as First Lady of North Dakota, Kathryn created and led an impactful initiative called Recovery Reinvented, which confronted the stigma and shame associated with addiction. She is a passionate champion for recovery, and we are grateful she has been a member of our Board of Trustees since 2018. https://cbsn.ws/4a4smlB

Quitting smoking may do more than just improve physical health.

Research funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that individuals who stopped smoking had 42 percent greater odds of being in recovery from non-tobacco substance use disorders as well.

Researchers say the findings reinforce the importance of treating multiple addictions together rather than in isolation.

During Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, we are focusing on one of the biggest barriers to effective treatment. In this short clip, Holly Patton, our lead behavioral health care manager shares why changing the conversation around addiction matters.

Shame, misinformation and fear prevent so many people from seeking help, even though substance use disorder is a treatable medical condition. Help us ensure understanding replaces shame, because judgment-free support can change lives.

There was a time when the average American had a reliable general fund of knowledge of illicit substances and their risks. That world disappeared some time ago. Exotic substances available online and easily purchased with pay apps or crypto now proliferate the market. Some are actually cheaper, more powerful, and preferable to the illicit consumer. New and concentrated forms of Kratom are arguably in the top three of the current list of new, once considered therapeutic or benign, compounds that are causing real problems for those with substance use vulnerabilities.

Join us for a free 1-hour online CE event on February 24: The Hidden Dangers of Kratom. This educational session will explore emerging risks, clinical considerations, and real-world impact.

Oklahomans love football and the Super Bowl is just around the corner. Yet, for those in early recovery, the anxiety around events and celebrations starts to rise as invitations to parties come in. For these folks, there just isn’t a lot experience yet navigating events comfortably, enjoying themselves, and holding onto sobriety in high risk situations. Dr. Brian Couey, Executive Director, and Dr. Elisa Hallerman, author of Soulbriety, teamed up with Everyday Health to share a tactical playbook for getting through events and parties and coming out with recovery in tact.

There’s strength in numbers — if you plan to attend any festivities this holiday season, bring a sober buddy with you, experts suggest. Here’s why.

Featured in Pioneer Magazine, Arcadia Trails’ own Dr. Brian Couey speaking on a panel for OCCC students to discuss the changing landscape of opioid addiction and treatment. He shares the stage with Dr. Jason Beaman, Chief Medical Officer for ODMHSAS, Dr. Jennifer Allen, OCCC Chair of Department of Psychology, and attorney Jeff Hargrave, Director of the Whitten Newman Foundation. Advocacy and education are critical for fighting the new era of stigma surrounding addiction.
