🚨Some inaccurate info I’ve seen this week (and some of this was from an IBCLCšŸ™ˆ):

🚩It’s normal for your baby to ļæ¼want to eat every hour for days

🚩It’s normal for BF babies not to p**p everyday

🚩Tongue and lip ties don’t affect feeding

🚩You should rush out for a tongue tie release right away

🚨There’s a big difference between somebody who works with moms and babies in-person every day and somebody who is just looking for clicks, views, or to sell you a course or product!

They may claim to have years of experience or some special insight, but just because it’s on the internet, doesn’t make it true.

They’re so small and seem so fragile in the newborn phase!

What part of baby care scared you the most? For me, it was definitely trimming their nails! Even though I was a nurse who had placed IVs, removed sutures and staples, given injections, performed CPR, etc, I was still scared to trim those tiny little nails šŸ™ˆ

While the trend is huge on social media, let’s take a look at why you should pass on encapsulated placenta:

* 🚨 Milk Supply Risk:
This is a big one. High levels of hormones (like estrogen) in the placenta can actually tank your milk supply before it even fully established. šŸ“‰šŸ„› I’ve seen this many times in my practice šŸ‘€. Once the mom stops the placenta pills, supply improves as long as we catch it early.

* No Proven Benefits:
Extensive research shows no evidence that it helps with postpartum depression, energy levels, or milk supply.

* Safety Risks:
The placenta acts as a filter during pregnancy, meaning it can harbor heavy metals (like lead and mercury) and harmful bacteria. ā˜ ļø

* Infection Hazard:
There are documented cases of babies developing life-threatening Strep B infections because of bacteria passed through the mother’s milk after she took placenta capsules. šŸ¤’
Your body did an amazing job growing a human—now it’s time to fuel it with things we know work! šŸ„—

Hot take from an IBCLC: sometimes feeding issues start with too much milk, not too little.

When there’s a big oversupply and baby is also getting bottles with no pacing, milk can come in faster than a baby’s feeding reflexes can handle.

Babies are born to coordinate suck → swallow → breathe.
But if milk is basically pouring in, they can’t always keep up.
That’s when we start seeing:
• gulping
• coughing or choking
• clicking at the breast
• pulling off and getting frustrated
• preferring faster flows

Over time, babies can start adapting to the speed of the milk instead of learning their natural feeding rhythm.
More milk isn’t always better.
Sometimes babies need slower flow, less pressure, and more time to organize their feeding reflexes.

If your baby has developed a flow preference (NOT ni**le confusion-that’s not a real thing), or you feel bottles/forceful letdown have creating some feeding difficulties, an experienced IBCLC can help! Make sure you’re partnering with someone who understands infant reflexes and what to do when they’re not working properly.

šŸ¤±šŸ¼When should you introduce a bottle to your breastfed baby?

šŸ¼Ideally, we’re waiting 4 to 6 weeks to introduce the bottle (3 weeks at the earliest) as long as breastfeeding is going well. If your baby struggles with breastfeeding it may be necessary to use a bottle therapeutically earlier.

ā€¼ļøWhy do some babies refuse bottles?ā€¼ļø

1. We waited too long to introduce the bottle.

2. Baby has oral dysfunction that hasn’t been addressed and now bottles are difficult for them.

ā€¼ļøBottle Feeding Red Flagsā€¼ļø

🚩Coughing, choking or sputtering

🚩Losing milk at the corners of the mouth

🚩Clicking or slurping sounds

🚩Gagging

🚩Repeatedly pushing the bottle out with the tongue

🚩Chomping instead of sucking
