Chaplain Krista shares her message from our candle light service.
This holiday season is a time of remembrance of others, those we love and grieve.
As we light candles during the holidays we reflect that the candles may represent our grief-that the pain of loss is as intense as our love. We share our grief as we have shared the light of love in our life. Candles represent our courage to confront sorrow, comfort each other, and make changes in our lives. Candles represent our memories: the times we laughed, cried, became angry, forgiveness, of the care and joy you gave. Candles represent love: that the light of your loved ones may always shine. Candles represent hope: that your loved ones lives through you, never erased from memory and continues to make a difference in the world.
The Psalmist told us that your word, O Lord, is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our pathway. Continue to guide and strengthen those who have lost perhaps a part of themselves. Give them that peace that often, inexplicably surpasses all our human understanding. Amen

“Grief is like a snowflake…by Julia Cook
Sometimes it comes oneflake at a time; other times it comes like a blizzard. It melts away, but it always comes back. Just as each snowflake is unique, each person experiences grief in their own unique way.”

God is light and in Him there is no darkness. (1 John 1:5)
Last night we gathered at HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Effingham in the chapel to honor our loved ones that we are grieving. We lit candles in their memory.
In the memory of those we grieve this holiday season, may we embrace our holiday memories with them and the gratitude for the joy we shared.

HSHS Hospice
Our team at HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois delivers our promise to provide high-quality Franciscan healthcare through two programs: Supportive Care and Hospice Care.
The goal of Supportive Care is to improve how a patient functions each day as well as improve his or her quality of life throughout the course of their life-limiting illness. Supportive Care addresses physical, emotional and spiritual concerns when patients and their families are coping with their illness. Timely attention to early management of symptoms has been shown to increase quality of life, improve function, and even extend ones length of life. Supportive Care can be delivered at any stage of illness beginning at the time of diagnosis. Supportive care can be provided while they are receiving curative or life-prolonging medical treatment. Such treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
Hospice is a comprehensive program that focuses on quality of life. We recognize dying as part of the normal process of living. We affirm life and neither hasten nor postpone death. Hospice provides support and care for individuals and their loved ones as they face the last phases of a life‑limiting illness.
Our interdisciplinary hospice team includes advance nurse practitioners, registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, licensed social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.
We also offer the Everlasting Memories program to patients on our hospice service. This program allows us to grant wishes to our patients and provide them with an item or event to cherish in their final moments.
