Your shoulder pain isn't actually just a shoulder problem.

You've been told it's adhesive capsulitis: inflammation and adhesions in the shoulder capsule causing stiffness and pain. The usual plan? Physical Therapy, maybe a cortisone shot, and wait 1-2 years.

But why did it freeze in the first place?

Hormones play part of a role and this is why women who are perimenopausal or menopausal have a higher significance of having this happen to them. But it is also a protective response driven by the nervous system - and it may start in your neck.

The shoulder is controlled by nerves exiting the cervical spine at C4-C7. When cervical subluxations (misalignments) create nerve interference, shoulder muscles guard and spasm. Inflammation increases, movement becomes restricted, and the joint "freezes" to protect compromised nerve supply.

It is also inflammatory. The vagus nerve regulates the body's inflammatory response. Upper cervical subluxations (C1-C2) can disrupt your vagus nerve function, allowing inflammation to persist. Tissue around the shoulder becomes chronically inflamed, adhesions form, and the capsule stiffness. tHis isn't just mechanical - it's neurological inflammation.

Neck imbalances creates full body compensation: altered shoulder blade position, rib cage rotation, thoracic changes, pelvic tilt. Frozen shoulder is often the end result of a pattern that began in the spine years earlier.

Physical therapy helps but doesn't address the main concern. Cortisone wont restore vagus function. Waiting allows compensation patterns to deepen.

Chiropractic care (along with massage therapy and some PT) addresses the root of the problem by focusing on the cervical spine restoring vagus nerve function, shoulder nerve supply, and addressing other misalignments within the spine fixing the postural patterns.

When your nervous system function improves - inflammation decreases, mobility returns, and pain resolves.

Treat the system, not the symptom.
