“Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing.

It is making a spreadsheet of your debt and enforcing a morning routine and cooking yourself healthy meals and no longer just running from your problems and calling the distraction a solution.

It is often doing the ugliest thing that you have to do, like sweat through another workout or tell a toxic friend you don’t want to see them anymore or get a second job so you can have a savings account or figure out a way to accept yourself so that you’re not constantly exhausted from trying to be everything, all the time and then needing to take deliberate, mandated breaks from living to do basic things like drop some oil into a bath and read Marie Claire and turn your phone off for the day.

A world in which self-care has to be such a trendy topic is a world that is sick. Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so absolutely exhausted that we need some reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure.

True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.

And that often takes doing the thing you least want to do.

It often means looking your failures and disappointments square in the eye and re-strategizing. It is not satiating your immediate desires. It is letting go. It is choosing new. It is disappointing some people. It is making sacrifices for others. It is living a way that other people won’t, so maybe you can live in a way that other people can’t.

It is letting yourself be normal. Regular. Unexceptional. It is sometimes having a dirty kitchen and deciding your ultimate goal in life isn’t going to be having abs and keeping up with your fake friends. It is deciding how much of your anxiety comes from not actualizing your latent potential, and how much comes from the way you were being trained to think before you even knew what was happening.

If you find yourself having to regularly indulge in consumer self-care, it’s because you are disconnected from actual self-care, which has very little to do with “treating yourself” and a whole lot do with parenting yourself and making choices for your long-term wellness.

It is no longer using your hectic and unreasonable life as justification for self-sabotage in the form of liquor and procrastination. It is learning how to stop trying to “fix yourself” and start trying to take care of yourself… and maybe finding that taking care lovingly attends to a lot of the problems you were trying to fix in the first place.

It means being the hero of your life, not the victim. It means rewiring what you have until your everyday life isn’t something you need therapy to recover from. It is no longer choosing a life that looks good over a life that feels good. It is giving the hell up on some goals so you can care about others. It is being honest even if that means you aren’t universally liked. It is meeting your own needs so you aren’t anxious and dependent on other people.

It is becoming the person you know you want and are meant to be. Someone who knows that salt baths and chocolate cake are ways to enjoy life – not escape from it.”

The Felt Sense Prayer

I am the pain in your head, the knot in your stomach, the unspoken grief in your smile. I am your high blood pressure, your fear of challenge, your lack of trust. I am your hot flashes, your fragile lower back, your agitation and your fatigue.

You tend to disown me, suppress me, ignore me, inflate me, coddle me, condemn me. You usually want me to go away immediately, to disappear, just back into obscurity. More times than not, I am only the most recent notes of a long symphony, the most evident branches of roots that have been challenged for seasons.

So I implore you. I am a messenger with good news, as disturbing as I can be at times. I am wanting to guide you back to those tender places in yourself, the place where you can hold yourself with compassion and honesty. I may ask you to alter your diet, get more sleep, exercise regularly, breathe more consciously.

I might encourage you to seek a vaster reality and worry less about the day-to-day fluctuations of life. I may ask you to explore the bonds and the wounds of your relationship. Wherever I lead you, my hope is that you will realise that success will not be measured by my eradication, but by the shift in the internal landscape from which I emerge.

I am your friend, not your enemy. I belong. I have no desire to bring pain and suffering into your life. I am simply tugging at your sleeve, too long immune to gentle nudges. I desire for you to allow me to speak to you in a way that enlivens your higher instincts for self-care.

My charge is to energise you, to listen to me with the sensitive ear and heart of a mother attending to her precious baby. You are being so vast, so complex with amazing capacities for self-regulation and healing. Let me be one of the harbingers that lead you to the mysterious core of your being, where insight and wisdom are naturally available when called upon with a sincere heart.

Hello friends! Just wanted to let you all know: I'm relaxing my rule that everyone should wait in their cars for their massages. WOOHOO! 🌷🌺🌸

Now you can do just like old times: come on in and enjoy our air-conditioned waiting room! No need to roast in your cars like we did last summer. FINALLY! 😃

As always, thanks for gracing me with your presence, trust, and muscular adhesions!

PS- Can you believe that last year at this time I was still closed? It feels like a lifetime ago!

Many of you have been asking me,
"When is my last appointment with you before your big move?" 🚗💨

Well, the truth is, I don't know yet, haha! 🥴

-If you have appointments with me in the first two weeks of July, those will be fine for sure. 👍
-If you have an appointment in the last week of July (7/26 onwards), I'm likely going to need to cancel that for packing and driving down there.
-The third week of July (7/19-7/23) is unknown territory to me at this time, and will become clear as it gets a little closer. I promise I'll let you know with plenty of time to spare! ⏳

Since we don't know exactly where and when our NC apartment will be available, we don't know the exact date that we will be skipping town. And I love working with all of you, so I'll stay working as long as humanly possible. 😊

Thanks again for being my lovely clients. I'm blessed to know you all! 🌷

Hello dear clients,

Would any more of you be interested in being part of my internship program for the massage therapy students at Wellness Massage Institute? I am hosting a few days over the next month (dates TBD, but probably weekend) where existing clients of mine can get student massage for $35/hour. You'd be getting some amazing treatments yourself, as well as helping new therapists get experience in an office setting.

This year's crop of massage therapists have had to be extremely covid-careful, obviously, and haven't had the luxury of practicing on just anyone like we did when I was in school! So, by donating your own time, you'd be doing BOTH yourself and these students a huge favor. :)

Basic details:
-Things will be very similar to when you get a massage from me. It will take place at my office either in my room or another one within the same office. This will start within the next couple weeks, in late March/early April.

-Masks will be worn by everyone at all times (except clients, who will use my usual pillowcase mask while face-down).

-You will have to answer Covid questions and get your temperature taken. I don't do this for you all- because I know everyone is trustworthy- but the students don't know you yet, and I want them to practice taking all the precautions that they would use on any new client.

-You will fill out an intake form and discuss your goals with your student, and then they will customize a massage for you using Swedish and/or Deep Tissue techniques.

-You will pay via cash or check (they are not set up to use my Square CC processing yet)

Please comment below, or message me directly if interested!
Best,
Nina
