7 important tips if you have been involved in an accident.
Step 1 Stop...never drive away and protect the scene with flares or a flashlight.
Step 2 Call the police even if your injuries seem minor. The officer will produce an accident report and often injuries become more pronounced between 1-3 days.
Step 3. Make an accurate record of the accident and take pictures of both vehicles, damage and pictures of any visible injuries.
Step 4. Exchange information including names, address and phone numbers. Get contact information from any witnesses.
Step 5. Report the accident to DMV within 10 days if there are injuries or if damage exceeds $1,000. Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.
Step 6. Seek medical attention if you feel you have an injury. Some injuries can appear mild at first and progress over the next few days. We often see patients that come in with moderate neck and back stiffness that progress to more serious symptoms. It is common to see post concussion symptoms including dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, headaches and confusion. Make sure your doctor documents all the symptoms you are experiencing.
Step 7 Keep a file to include the claim adjuster contact information, rental car receipts, loss of work time, etc.
