🌸⏰ Springing forward can be tough on sleep routines—especially for kids! 😴

A few days before the time change, try shifting bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes each night.
☀️ Morning sunlight and 📅 keeping daily routines consistent can really help little bodies adjust.

Some temporary sleep disruption is totally normal, and most kids settle back in within about a week 💛

If sleep struggles linger, let us know—we’re always happy to help your family rest easier.

😴🌱 Questions about your toddler’s nap schedule? You’re not alone!

Many toddlers still need naps, but sleep patterns can change quickly at this age. Most children 1–3 years old benefit from one nap per day, usually lasting 1–3 hours. As they grow, naps may shorten or become less predictable, and that’s normal!

🛏️ Signs your toddler may be getting ready to drop a nap include:
• Taking a long time to fall asleep at bedtime
• Regularly fighting naps
• Late afternoon naps that disrupt nighttime sleep

📖 Even when naps shorten or disappear, quiet rest time (reading, puzzles, calm play) can help toddlers reset and avoid over-tiredness.

If you have questions about your child’s sleep or nap schedule, reach out—we’re happy to help you find what works best for your family 💛

👶💛 Newborns and vitamin K:

Newborns are born with low levels of vitamin K, which is essential for normal blood clotting. Without it, babies are at risk for rare but serious bleeding, including bleeding in the brain or other organs during the first weeks and months of life.

💉 The vitamin K shot helps prevent this bleeding and has been used safely for decades!

🤍 Have questions about vitamin K or other newborn care topics?
Schedule a meet & greet with Dr. Garza before you deliver—we’re happy to walk you through everything and answer your questions!

Snacks play a big role in fueling growing bodies at every age. Here are some suggestions:

👶 Toddlers: soft fruits, yogurt, or cheese
🧒 School-age kids: apple slices with peanut butter, hummus & crackers
🧑‍🎓 Teens: heartier options like trail mix or smoothies

🛡️💉 Why the DTaP vaccine matters 💉🛡️

Before vaccines, diphtheria was a leading cause of childhood death. It caused severe throat infections and a thick membrane that could block breathing, earning the terrifying nickname “the strangling angel.”

Thanks to the diphtheria vaccine, now part of the routine DTaP series, cases have dropped dramatically. This vaccine is safe, well-studied, and closely monitored. Most side effects are mild, such as arm or leg soreness or a low-grade fever.

So why don’t we hear about diphtheria anymore? Because vaccines work. But the bacteria still exists, and if vaccination rates drop, diphtheria can return, putting children and vulnerable individuals at risk.

📞 Call our office today to make sure your child is up to date on their DTaP vaccines.

❤️👶 Congenital Heart Defects: what parents should know 👶❤️

Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most common birth defects, affecting about 1 in 100 babies. Some are mild and may resolve on their own, while others are more complex and need ongoing care or surgery.

👶 Early detection matters.
Many CHDs are seen on prenatal ultrasounds, but some aren’t obvious until after birth. That’s why newborns receive CHD screening in the nursery using a painless pulse oximetry test to check oxygen levels. This simple test can help catch serious heart conditions early, when treatment is most effective.

🚨 Know the signs:
• Rapid breathing
• Blue or gray lips or skin
• Poor feeding
• Excessive tiredness

If you notice these symptoms, your baby should be evaluated promptly.

💙 Awareness saves lives. Share this post to help more families understand CHD and the importance of newborn screening.

Feeling the mid-year slump? You’re not alone! 📚💤

Around this time of year, many kids start to feel tired, bored, or unmotivated—and that’s totally normal. The good news? A few small shifts can make a big difference.

✨ Set small, achievable weekly goals
🎉 Celebrate progress (even the tiny wins!)
🧠 Mix up routines with fun study breaks, games, or hands-on learning
🏃‍♀️ Prioritize sleep, movement, and open conversations about frustrations

Remind your child that progress isn’t always a straight line, and every small step counts toward big growth! 💛

Have your kids hit the mid-year slump? What’s helped them push through? Tell us in the comments ⬇️

❄️💨 Cold weather & asthma: what parents should know 💨❄️

Cold air can irritate the airways and trigger asthma symptoms in children. A few simple steps can help reduce flares this season:
🧣 Use a scarf or mask over the mouth and nose

💊 Use pre-treatment when advised by your doctor

🚨 Call us if you notice:
• Needing the rescue inhaler more often
• Nighttime coughing
• Shortness of breath with low-impact activities

Now is a great time to review your child’s asthma action plan and make sure medications and follow-ups are up to date. Call our office—we’re here to help your child breathe easier. 💚

💛✨ Let’s clear the air: you are enough. ✨💛

Your kids don’t need a perfect mom — they need you.
You are irreplaceable, even on the days you’re tired, overwhelmed, or serving cereal for dinner. 🥣

Moms are human. That means we make mistakes, have hard days, and sometimes question ourselves, and that’s completely normal!

And a gentle reminder: “Instagram moms” aren’t real life. Filters, curated moments, and quiet houses don’t tell the full story. Real motherhood is messy, loud, loving, and beautifully imperfect, and that’s what makes it meaningful!

Take a deep breath. You’re doing better than you think. 💚

🖤👩🏽‍⚕️ Honoring Black leaders in pediatrics 👨🏾‍⚕️🖤

Black physicians and researchers have shaped pediatric care through innovation, advocacy, and leadership. Representation in medicine matters—it builds trust, strengthens care, and helps families feel seen and heard.

✨ A few pioneers we want to highlight:

• Dr. Natalia Tanner – The first African American female physician to receive a fellowship from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

• Vivien Thomas – A brilliant surgical technician whose work helped pioneer pediatric heart surgery alongside Dr. Alfred Blalock, saving countless children’s lives despite facing immense racism.

• Dr. Doris Wethers – A hematologist and trailblazer in sickle cell disease research, whose advocacy for newborn screening transformed outcomes for children and mentored generations of Black physicians.

We honor their legacy and the continued impact of Black leaders in medicine—past, present, and future. 🤍
