Kidney Cancer Facts
• Common Type: The most common type is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), accounting for about 90% of kidney cancer cases.
• Risk Factors: Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and a family history of kidney cancer increase the risk.
• Symptoms: Often no early symptoms, but as it progresses, signs may include blood in urine, lower back pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.
• Screening & Detection: No routine screening is recommended for kidney cancer. However, imaging tests (CT, MRI, ultrasound) can detect tumors, often incidentally.
• Survival Rates: If detected early, the 5-year survival rate can be over 90%, but it drops significantly for advanced stages.
• Prevention: Maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure, and avoiding smoking can reduce risk.
