Air fresheners, candles, and incense can make your space smell great, but many of them release harmful chemicals that can negatively impact your health. Here's why:
Why Are They Harmful?
1. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) - Many air fresheners contain VOCs like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and long-term respiratory issues.
2. Phthalates - Found in synthetic fragrances, phthalates can disrupt hormones and potentially contribute to reproductive issues.
3. Particulate Matter - Burning candles and incense releases fine particles into the air, which can irritate the lungs and exacerbate conditions like asthma.
4. Soot and Carcinogens - Paraffin candles produce soot and may release carcinogens like benzene. Incense smoke contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been linked to cancer.
Healthier Alternatives
1. Essential Oil Diffusers - Use pure essential oils in a diffuser for a natural and non-toxic scent.
2. Beeswax I or Soy Candles - Choose unscented or naturally scented versions without synthetic fragrances.
3. Simmer Pots - Boil water with cinnamon sticks, citrus peels, and herbs for a natural, cozy scent.
4. Houseplants - Plants
like lavender, eucalyptus, and
jasmine naturally freshen the air.
5. Baking Soda & Activated Charcoal - These absorb odors instead of masking them.
6. Open Windows - Improving ventilation is the simplest way to keep your home smelling fresh.
